Why Starburst feels different
NetEnt released Starburst in January 2012, and it has remained one of the studio's best-known titles. The look is pure arcade: neon gems, a gold bar and a red seven floating over a dark starfield, with a burst of light each time something pays. Under the shine sits one of the leanest designs you will find in an online casino lobby. There is no bonus round, no climbing multiplier and nothing to buy.
The whole game rests on two ideas. First, the ten paylines pay from both ends of the screen, not only from the left. Second, a special wild expands over its reel, locks in place and hands you a free respin. Everything else follows from those two rules, which is why you can understand it fully in a single sitting.
The numbers NetEnt publishes are short: 96.08% RTP, wins on 23% of spins, and a ceiling set at 800x the stake. The studio's game page has also classed Starburst as low volatility.
Stakes and limits in shillings
NetEnt sets the base range at 0.10 to 100 per spin, with all ten lines always active. On a shilling account the real minimum and maximum are fixed by the platform, so open the settings panel to see your exact KSh limits. For the examples on this page we use four everyday levels:
| Stake per spin | 100 spins cost | 800x cap |
|---|---|---|
| KSh 20 | KSh 2,000 | KSh 16,000 |
| KSh 50 | KSh 5,000 | KSh 40,000 |
| KSh 100 | KSh 10,000 | KSh 80,000 |
| KSh 200 | KSh 20,000 | KSh 160,000 |
The middle column is the useful one. A hundred spins pass quickly here, often in under five minutes, so your session budget runs out faster than the stake makes it look.
What happens during a spin
- Choose the stake. You cannot switch lines off, all ten play every time.
- The five reels stop, showing fifteen symbols in a 5x3 window.
- The game reads each line from reel 1 towards the right.
- It then reads the same line again starting from reel 5 and moving left.
- If a Starburst wild appears, it grows to cover its reel and acts as a substitute.
- That reel is held while the rest spin once more. A fresh wild repeats the process, to a maximum of three respins.
No scatter, no pick screen, no counter. Each round is settled within seconds, which makes the game light on mobile data and easy to play in short bursts, say on a matatu ride home.
Symbols and where to find the values
The paying set is a group of coloured gems plus two older slot icons, a gold bar and a seven. Line values are not printed on NetEnt's public pages. Inside the game, the paytable shows every amount converted to your currency at your current stake, so the numbers change as you move the bet up or down.
Before you play for money, set your usual stake and note the KSh amount for every symbol at three, four and five in a row. It takes a minute and tells you exactly what a typical hit is worth compared with the cost of a spin.
The Starburst wild has no line value of its own. It earns its keep by completing other combinations and by triggering the respin.
Paying from both sides
Most line slots only count a run that begins on the leftmost reel. Starburst also counts runs that begin on the rightmost reel. In practice that means:
- A trio of matching gems that starts on reel 5 and runs left still pays, a result that would be dead in a left-only game.
- One line can occasionally connect from both ends on a single spin. The help screen explains how such cases are settled.
- A wild in the centre of the grid serves runs heading in both directions at once.
This is where the 23% hit frequency comes from. Statistically, a little under one spin in four returns something. Keep in mind that many of those returns are smaller than the stake, so a win alert does not always mean you are ahead on that spin.
Expanding wilds and the respin chain
When the Starburst wild lands, it stretches to fill all three positions on its reel. Every one of the ten lines passes through that reel, so each line now carries a wild at that point. The reel then freezes and the others spin again at no extra cost.
If the respin delivers another wild, it expands and freezes too, and a further respin follows. NetEnt caps the chain at three respins. At the end of a full chain you can be looking at three wild reels at the same time, and with both-ways pays such a screen connects on many lines in both directions.
Do not confuse this with free spins. Nothing opens on a new screen and nothing counts down; you simply get extra spins at your current stake triggered by the wild itself.
Worked example at KSh 50
Because the real symbol values live in the in-game paytable, this example uses an invented figure to show the structure. Imagine that at KSh 50 per spin, three gold bars on one line pay KSh 40.
- First spin. A wild drops onto reel 3 and expands. Two lines complete three bars counting from the left: 2 x KSh 40 = KSh 80. The reel locks.
- Respin one. A second wild covers reel 2. With wild reels side by side, a bar on reel 1 of a line is enough for a left-side run, and a bar paired with reel 4 can help from the right. Four lines connect: KSh 160.
- Respin two. Reel 4 turns wild as well. Now reels 2, 3 and 4 are all wild, so any line with matching symbols on reels 1 and 5 can pay from both ends. Six connecting runs pay KSh 240.
- Respin three. One last spin runs with reels 2, 3 and 4 still frozen, and then the chain is over.
In this invented case, three paid steps add up to KSh 480 from a single KSh 50 stake, almost ten times the bet. Real outcomes depend on which symbols land and on your paytable, but the pattern holds: every extra frozen wild reel opens more lines to a win. Even the best possible screen cannot pass 800 times the stake, which is KSh 40,000 at this level.
RTP and volatility in real terms
An RTP of 96.08% means that over a very large number of spins the game returns about KSh 960.80 for every KSh 1,000 staked, leaving the house roughly KSh 39 per thousand. That is a long-run average, not a forecast for tonight. Open the help screen of the version you load and confirm the figure there.
The low volatility rating matches the other numbers. With frequent hits and a modest ceiling, your balance tends to rise and fall in small steps rather than collapsing or jumping. That makes the game easier to plan around, but it still carries a house edge on every spin.
How it compares with other classics
Fire Joker from Play'n GO shares the same 800x ceiling but uses a smaller five-line layout and a medium volatility rating, with a 96.15% RTP. If Starburst feels too gentle, that is a slightly spicier alternative in the same price range.
Gonzo's Quest, NetEnt's other long-running favourite, takes a different path: 20 lines, cascading reels, a multiplier that reaches 15x in its free round and a 2,200x top payout at 95.97% RTP. More swing, higher peaks.
At the far end sits Book of Dead, a high-volatility book slot capped at 5,000x where almost all the value waits inside a free spins round. Pick Starburst if you want to see something happen every few spins; pick a book game if you are willing to wait for a much larger hit.
Playing it sensibly from Kenya
NetEnt has not published an embeddable demo for this page, so the rules screen at a licensed platform is where you learn the details. Our guide to free demos explains what to look for when a practice mode is available. Points worth checking before you top up through M-Pesa or Airtel Money:
- The RTP figure printed in the help screen.
- The minimum and maximum stake in KSh.
- The paytable values at the stake you actually plan to use.
For a session budget, 150 to 200 spins at your chosen stake is a realistic size for a low-volatility game, so KSh 3,000 to KSh 4,000 at KSh 20 per spin. Raising the stake only scales wins up in proportion; it never opens a bigger feature, because there is none. Decide your stop point first and keep to it.
Online gambling in Kenya is regulated under the Gambling Control Act 2025 by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Kenya, which took over from the BCLB. Stick to operators licensed for Kenya, and play only if you are 18 or older.
Where to play Starburst in shillings
Questions from Kenyan players
What is the RTP of Starburst?
The studio quotes 96.08%. Over a very long run that is about KSh 960.80 returned for every KSh 1,000 staked, though any single session can land far above or below it. Check the help screen of your version for the exact figure.
Does Starburst have a free spins round?
No. Its only feature is the Starburst wild, which expands over its reel, stays locked and gives a respin. A new wild repeats this, up to three respins in one chain, all at your current stake.
What is the biggest win in Starburst in shillings?
The cap is 800 times the bet. That is KSh 16,000 at KSh 20 per spin, KSh 80,000 at KSh 100 and KSh 160,000 at KSh 200.
What does paying both ways mean?
Every line is checked twice, once from reel 1 to the right and once from reel 5 to the left. A run that starts on reel 5 therefore pays, which a left-only slot would ignore.
Is Starburst a good slot for a small budget?
Its low volatility and 23% hit frequency mean balances usually move in small steps, which suits fixed budgets. It still has a house edge, so set a spend limit before you start and stop when you reach it.
What stakes can I play Starburst at in Kenya?
NetEnt's base range is 0.10 to 100 per spin with all ten lines active. The exact minimum and maximum in KSh are set by the platform and shown in the game settings.
Can I buy a feature in Starburst?
No. Nothing in the game can be purchased, since there is no bonus round at all. Every respin chain starts only when a Starburst wild lands naturally.
