Paylines, Ways, Clusters and Scatter Pays
A pay system is the rule a slot uses to decide which symbols form a win. Classic games pay along fixed paylines, Megaways games count every adjacent combination as a way, cluster games pay for connected groups and scatter-pay games pay for enough matching symbols anywhere on the grid.

Why the pay system matters
The pay system changes how a paytable should be read, how often small wins appear and how features like tumbles and wild multipliers interact with the grid. Two paytables that both say "50x" can mean very different things: 50 times the line bet on a line game, or 50 times the total stake on a scatter-pay game. Knowing which system you are looking at is the first step to understanding any slot on this hub.
Fixed paylines
A payline is a predefined path across the reels. A win needs matching symbols on consecutive reels along that path, starting from the leftmost reel. The Pragmatic line games here use fixed lines: The Dog House has 20 on a 5×3 grid, Big Bass Bonanza has 10. Novomatic's classic Book of Ra uses 9 lines, Deluxe and Magic use 10, and Book of Ra 6 keeps 10 lines on a 6×3 grid.
Total bet versus line bet
Pragmatic paytables are quoted in multiples of your total bet. On Big Bass Bonanza three fishing rods pay 5x, four pay 20x and five pay 200x; at a 1.00 total bet, five rods on a line return 200.00. Five rottweilers on a line in The Dog House pay 37.5x, so 37.50 at 1.00.
Novomatic quotes the Book of Ra paytable per line bet. Five explorers pay 5,000x the line bet. At a line bet of 0.10 that is 500.00; three pharaohs at 40x the line bet pay 4.00 on that line. Always check which base the paytable uses before comparing numbers.
Wilds on lines
Line games often let wilds carry multipliers. In The Dog House the kennel wild lands only on reels 2, 3 and 4 with 2x or 3x, and several wilds on the same line add their values: three 3x wilds make 9x. A 1.50 line win passing through them becomes 13.50.
Megaways ways
Megaways games drop fixed lines. Each of six reels shows a random number of symbols on every spin, and any matching symbol on adjacent reels from the left counts, whatever row it is in. The number of ways is the product of the reel heights.
- With reel heights 3, 4, 5, 6, 4 and 3, the spin has 3 × 4 × 5 × 6 × 4 × 3 = 4,320 ways.
- With 2 symbols on every reel it drops to 64 ways; with 7 on every reel it reaches 117,649, the range listed for The Dog House Megaways.
- One spin of the Big Bass Bonanza Megaways demo showed 17,280 ways, for example reel heights of 4, 5, 6, 6, 4 and 6.
Wins multiply by the number of matching positions. If reel 1 shows three dogs, reel 2 shows two and reel 3 shows one, that is 3 × 2 × 1 = 6 winning ways of a three-of-a-kind, each paid at the paytable value for that symbol. On The Dog House Megaways a six-of-a-kind dog pays 1.5x to 7.5x depending on the breed.
Cluster pays
Cluster games pay for groups of identical symbols that touch each other. On Sugar Rush, a 7×7 grid, five or more identical sweets connected horizontally or vertically form a win; diagonal contact does not count. The paytable rises with cluster size, in bands of 5, 8, 12 and 15 or more:

At a 2.00 stake, a cluster of eight hearts pays 1.5 × 2.00 = 3.00. A cluster of 15 lollipops pays 300.00. The jump between 12 and 15 symbols is steep, which is why big clusters built through tumbles carry so much weight.
Scatter pays anywhere
Scatter-pay games, sometimes called pay anywhere, ignore position entirely. On Sweet Bonanza and Gates of Olympus, eight or more identical symbols anywhere on the 6×5 grid win. The paytable pays by count bands of 8 to 9, 10 to 11 and 12 or more. In Sweet Bonanza the red heart pays 10x, 25x and 50x, and the banana pays 0.25x, 0.75x and 2x.
Worked example at 1.00: nine hearts scattered across the screen pay 10.00, and eight bananas on the same spin pay another 0.25, for 10.25 in total. Neither game has a wild symbol, so every win comes from raw symbol counts.

Common misconceptions
- "More lines or ways means a better game." The paytable is scaled to the system. 117,649 ways does not mean a higher RTP.
- "Paytable values are comparable across games." Only if they share a base. Book of Ra's line-bet figures cannot be set against Pragmatic's total-bet figures directly.
- "Diagonal clusters count." Not on Sugar Rush; only horizontal and vertical contact links symbols.
