Our take

The game earns its place through one clever rule: when the bonus retriggers you get a fresh special symbol, not just extra spins. Pair that with a 96.58% default return and you have a strong title for its type. The catch is the provider's own volatility score of 10, which promises long quiet runs.

Strong points
  • 96.58% return in the standard build
  • New special symbol joins on every retrigger
  • Orb and premiums start paying at two of a kind
  • ₦50 per line keeps the maths simple at ₦500 a spin
Watch out for
  • Top score of 10 on Play'n GO's volatility scale
  • Just 8 spins when the bonus opens
  • Operators may switch to a build paying 84.55%

Rise of Merlin in brief

Play'n GO's wizard slot arrived on 17 June 2019. Merlin appears here before his legend took shape, standing in a tower lit in soft blues and purples. An owl and a red dragon share the expensive symbol slots with him, card ranks fill the cheaper ones, and a glowing orb controls the action. According to the official rules sheet, volatility is rated 10, described as very high, and no single result can exceed 5,000 times the stake.

Structurally, it follows the book slot pattern: ten fixed paylines on five reels, wins counted from the left, and a bonus round built on one symbol that grows to fill entire reels.

Setting your stake in naira

You control three numbers. Lines run from one to ten, coins per line from one to five, and the coin value comes from a list the casino configures. Multiply them and you have the total. A ₦500 spin is easiest to follow as ten lines with one ₦50 coin, so each line is worth ₦50, and that is the setup behind every naira example on this page.

Should you want a smaller spin, lower the coin value and keep all ten lines on. Cutting lines might look like a saving, but the bonus symbol only collects on lines you have switched on, so half the lines means half of every expansion.

Where wins come from on an ordinary spin

After the reels stop, each active line is checked from reel one onward. An unbroken run of the same symbol pays, multiplied by the coins on that line. Where a line could pay in more than one way, only its biggest win counts, and the totals of all lines are then added up. Premiums pay from a pair, card ranks from three.

The crystal orb plays two roles at once. On a line it replaces any symbol, and five orbs together pay as much as the top premium. Off the lines it acts as the scatter: three or more anywhere on screen pay a scatter amount and start the bonus. Orbs never grow, however. In the bonus that job belongs to the chosen special symbol alone.

Paytable at ₦500 a spin

Line wins are published in coins, so each figure below is the provider's coin value multiplied by ₦50. Play'n GO has not said which illustration belongs to which premium tier, which is why the table describes tiers rather than characters.

TierFiveFourThreeTwo
Orb (wild) and top premium₦250,000₦50,000₦5,000₦500
Second premium₦80,000₦15,000₦1,500₦250
Third and fourth premiums₦30,000₦4,000₦1,000₦250
Best two card ranks₦6,000₦1,500₦250zero
Other three card ranks₦4,000₦1,000₦250zero

A pair of premiums or three card ranks, the most common base game results, returns ₦250 to ₦500, between half and all of the stake. The orb's scatter amounts are not in the public rules sheet; the in-game paytable lists them.

Free spins rules

Three orbs or more trigger 8 free spins, each played at your ₦500 stake. The game first draws one ordinary symbol at random to act as this round's growing symbol.

  • A premium special symbol grows once two copies are visible.
  • A card rank special symbol requires three copies before it grows.
  • Normal line wins on the spin are settled first. The special symbol then takes over every position on its reels and collects again on all active lines, even with empty reels between its copies.
  • Three or more orbs during the round bring 8 further spins and draw another special symbol to run alongside the first. Another retrigger adds a third.

Older book slots give you one symbol for the whole round. Here every retrigger is a second chance at a premium, and two separate symbols can grow on one spin, with both payments added together.

Naira bonus maths

All examples use ₦50 per line.

  • A mid-tier premium covering reels 1, 2 and 3. Each of the ten lines now holds a trio worth 20 line bets, so the expansion collects 20 x ₦50 x 10 = ₦10,000, twenty spins' worth.
  • That symbol on four reels instead. The per-line figure climbs to 80 line bets: 80 x ₦50 x 10 = ₦40,000.
  • A low card rank on three reels. 5 x ₦50 x 10 = ₦2,500, or five spins back. On four reels it reaches ₦10,000 and on five ₦40,000.
  • The top premium on every reel. 5,000 x ₦50 x 10 = ₦2,500,000, the 5,000x ceiling at this stake.

The draw at the start of free spins, and the extra draws from retriggers, decide most of what a bonus can return.

Volatility, RTP and your wallet

The standard RTP is 96.58%. Operators are offered four cheaper versions, the lowest paying 84.55%, and the three lowest are off limits to Malta-licensed sites. That gap is worth roughly ₦12,000 for every ₦100,000 staked over the long run, so check the RTP sentence in the help menu wherever you load the game.

A score of 10 is the top of Play'n GO's volatility scale. Most of the money sits in free spins, and the best rounds need a premium special symbol on four or five reels. Size your stake by the number of spins your budget buys: ₦25,000 is 50 spins at ₦500, which may pass with no bonus at all, or 250 spins at ₦100.

For comparison, Book of Dead opens its bonus with 10 spins and keeps one special symbol to the end, at a 96.21% default return. Rise of Merlin gives up two opening spins for the stacking rule and pays back a little more by default. Its paytable matches that of Legacy of Dead.

A quick bankroll check

Think of the base game as the cost of waiting for free spins. Many ordinary spins lose the stake or return only part of it, and the small premium pairs and card trios only slow the slide. That is normal for a slot of this type and is exactly why the number of spins you can afford matters more than the size of each one. Decide before you start how many naira you are willing to lose, divide it by your stake, and check that the result is in the hundreds of spins rather than the dozens.

Card gamble

A base game win can be put on a hidden card. Choose red or black correctly and the amount doubles, a 50% chance; name the suit correctly and it quadruples, a 25% chance. Five gambles in a row is the limit, and autoplay switches the option off. The rules state it leaves overall RTP untouched. A ₦2,000 win called right on color turns into ₦4,000, while one wrong guess removes it.

Testing it first in the demo

Our free demo is Play'n GO's practice version with play money and the full real rules. Spend a few hundred spins with a notebook: how many spins separate one bonus from the next, which symbol each bonus drew, whether any round reached a second special symbol, and what each round paid. Those notes show more about very high volatility than any description, and they help you choose a sensible naira stake later.

While you are there, open the help menu and find the RTP line, the bet limits and the orb scatter values, so you know where to look on a real site.

Rules in Nigeria and responsible play

Since the Supreme Court decided in November 2024 that gaming is a matter for state legislatures, licensing happens state by state; the National Lottery Act now covers only the Federal Capital Territory, and Lagos and other states run their own gaming regulators. Play only with operators licensed for your state, only if you are 18 or older, and set a spending limit before every session.

Questions Nigerian players ask

What return does Rise of Merlin pay?

The standard build pays 96.58%. Cheaper builds exist down to 84.55%, and the operator picks which one you get, so confirm the figure in the game's help menu.

What is the biggest possible win on a ₦500 spin?

Wins stop at 5,000 times the stake, so ₦2,500,000 on a ₦500 spin. Getting there needs the top premium spreading over all five reels in free spins.

How are the free spins triggered?

Land three or more crystal orbs anywhere. The round gives 8 spins and draws one special symbol that can spread over its reels; each later trigger adds 8 spins and draws another.

Does it matter which symbol the bonus draws?

Very much. Premiums grow from two copies and pay many times more per line than card ranks, which need three copies and stay cheap below four reels.

Is there a feature buy in Rise of Merlin?

No. The free spins come only from orbs. The single optional extra is staking base game wins on a hidden card.

How volatile is Rise of Merlin?

Play'n GO scores it 10 on its own scale, the very high band. Expect long runs between bonuses and a few rounds that deliver most of the return.

Is the demo the full game?

Yes. It is the provider's practice build with the same rules and pay values as the cash version, using play money.
