What Book of Ra is and why it still matters

Novomatic released Book of Ra in 2005, and the game set a template that dozens of later slots copied almost line for line. The layout is plain: five reels, three rows and nine fixed paylines. The theme is an Egyptian tomb raid led by an explorer, and the whole design revolves around one symbol, the book, which carries both the wild and the scatter role.

What keeps the slot relevant is the free games feature. Before the round starts, the game draws one regular symbol at random and turns it into a special expanding symbol for all ten free games. When that symbol lands on enough reels, it grows to fill them top to bottom and pays across every line, even if the reels are not next to each other. That single rule is responsible for almost every large win in the game.

If you already know the later editions, the original is the stripped-down version: nine lines instead of ten, older artwork and a lower return. If you are new to the series, it is the best place to learn how the mechanic works before you move on.

How a spin works, step by step

1. Set the stake. You choose a bet per line; with all nine lines active, the total bet per spin is nine times the line bet. Every value in the paytable is a multiple of that line bet.
2. Spin. Five reels stop, showing fifteen symbols on the 5x3 grid.
3. Line wins are checked. A line pays when matching symbols sit on it left to right, starting from reel 1. A match that starts on reel 2 does not count.
4. The book substitutes. Any book on a line stands in for the symbol that makes the best win on that line.
5. Scatter check. If three or more books appear anywhere on the screen, ten free games are awarded.
6. Optional gamble. After any win you can collect it or try to double it on the card colour guess.

That is the entire base game. There are no multipliers, no cascades and no side features, which makes it easy to read what happened on each spin.

Symbols and paytable

The symbol set has two tiers. The premium tier is the explorer, the pharaoh mask, the scarab and the bird statue. The low tier is five playing card ranks: A, K, Q, J and 10. The table below lists the per-line values for three, four and five of a kind as published for Book of Ra Deluxe, which uses the same symbol ladder. The 2005 original shows its own exact figures on the in-game paytable screen, so check it there before you rely on a single number.

All values are multiples of the line bet, not the total bet. Five explorers on a line pay 5,000 times the line bet, which is the top combination in the game. At a line bet of 0.10 that is 500.00 on that line.

The book: wild and scatter in one symbol

The book does two jobs at once. On a payline it acts as a wild and completes a combination for any other symbol. Anywhere on the screen it acts as a scatter: three or more books, in any positions, trigger the free games. Because of this double role, a single book in the middle of a line can quietly lift a two-symbol near miss into a paying three of a kind, while three books scattered across the reels start the bonus even with no line win at all.

A practical point: the book does not need to be on an active line to count toward the bonus. It only needs to be visible.

Free games and the expanding symbol

Three books award ten free games. Before the first one, the reels flash through the symbol set and stop on one symbol, which becomes the special expanding symbol for the whole round.

During the round, the special symbol follows its own rule. When it lands on at least three reels, it expands to cover all three rows of each of those reels, and then it pays in any position on every line. The reels do not have to be adjacent, and the symbol does not have to start on reel 1.

Worked example

Say you play nine lines at 0.10 per line, a total bet of 0.90. The draw picks the pharaoh as the special symbol. On one free game, pharaohs land on reels 1, 3 and 5. Normally that is no win, because the reels are not consecutive. In free games, the three pharaohs expand into three full reels, and each of the nine lines now crosses a pharaoh on three reels. Using the table value of 40x per line, that spin pays 40 x 0.10 = 4.00 per line, times nine lines, or 36.00. That is 40 times the total bet from one spin.

Now picture the best case: the explorer is drawn and lands on all five reels. Every line pays 5,000 x 0.10 = 500.00, so nine lines return 4,500.00 on a 0.90 spin. It is rare, but it shows why the draw at the start of the round matters so much. A card rank as the special symbol lands more often but pays far less; the explorer lands rarely but carries the whole top of the paytable.

The gamble feature

After a win you can press gamble instead of collecting. A face-down card appears, and you guess its colour. A correct guess doubles the win and lets you try again; a wrong guess loses the whole win from that spin. There is nothing to optimize here, since the guess is a coin flip, so the only decision is how much variance you want. Many players skip it on small base-game wins and never touch it after a big free games total.

RTP 92.13% and what it means for you

The original Book of Ra returns 92.13% over the long run. RTP is a theoretical average across millions of spins, not a promise for your session, but the gap still matters. At 92.13%, the expected cost of 1,000 spins at a 0.90 total bet is roughly 70.83, compared with about 44.10 at the 95.1% of Deluxe. The game also leans on the free games for a large part of its return, which shapes its volatility: expect quiet stretches, then the occasional round that makes up for them. The Book of Ra editions compared

The series has grown into several editions, and each one changes a single thing rather than the whole formula:

• Book of Ra Deluxe (2008) adds a tenth line, redraws the graphics and lifts the RTP to 95.1%, with a 94.26% build also in circulation. The gamble feature gets a ladder of steps.
• Book of Ra 6 adds a sixth reel on 10 lines with a 95.03% RTP and high volatility. The extra reel gives the expanding symbol more room to land.
• Book of Ra Magic (2018) keeps the Deluxe layout, but every retrigger during free spins adds another expanding symbol, up to nine in one cycle.

If you only play one of them, Deluxe is the most balanced choice. The original stays interesting as the reference point for all the others.

A simple rule is to plan for at least 200 to 300 spins per session: with a 90.00 budget, that means a total bet near 0.30 to 0.45, which on nine lines is a line bet of roughly 0.03 to 0.05. Set a stop point for both losses and wins before you start, and skip the gamble on wins you would be unhappy to lose.
