Slot Multipliers Explained
A multiplier is a factor that scales a win: a 1.00 win with a x5 multiplier pays 5.00. What makes slots differ is where the multiplier comes from and how several of them combine. Some games add them together, some multiply them, and some build a running total across a bonus round.

What a multiplier does
The idea is simple. A win is calculated from the paytable, and a multiplier then scales it. The details are where games separate. Before you judge a multiplier feature, you need three answers: where can multipliers appear, how do two or more of them combine, and when do they reset. The slots on this hub cover almost every combination, which makes them a good map of the mechanic.
Adding versus multiplying
This is the single most important distinction. Take two multipliers of x3 and x5 on the same win of 2.00:
- Added: 3 + 5 = x8, so the win pays 16.00.
- Multiplied: 3 × 5 = x15, so the win pays 30.00.
With small values the difference is modest. With large ones it is enormous: x10 and x5 multiplied give x50, added only x15. Most games on this hub add their multipliers; The Dog House Megaways 1000 is the notable exception, where wild multipliers in the same win multiply each other.
Wild multipliers on lines and ways
In The Dog House the kennel wild appears on reels 2, 3 and 4 with a random 2x or 3x. Several wilds on one line add their values, so three 3x wilds give 9x. During free spins each wild becomes sticky with its multiplier until the end, which is why one well-placed 3x can keep paying round after round.
The Dog House Royal Hunt uses wilds on the middle three reels, and every spin all wilds on the same reel share one multiplier of 2x or 3x. A line crossing a 2x wild on reel 2 and a 3x wild on reel 3 gets 2 + 3 = x5. The Megaways edition keeps adding wilds of 2x or 3x on reels 2 to 5, while the Megaways 1000 pushes wild values from x1 to x1000 and multiplies them within a win.
Orbs and bombs on scatter-pay grids
On Gates of Olympus, multiplier orbs from x2 to x500 can land on any spin. They are added together and applied only if the tumble sequence wins. The 1000 edition raises the ceiling to x1000 and the 2500 edition to x2500.
On Sweet Bonanza, multiplier bombs of 2x to 100x appear only in free spins. They stay until the tumble sequence ends, then their values are added and multiply that sequence's total win. Worked example at 1.00: a sequence worth 3.40 with bombs of 5x and 10x pays 15 × 3.40 = 51.00. Sweet Bonanza 1000 widens the bombs to x1000, Sweet Bonanza 2500 to x2500.
The running total in Gates free spins
In Gates of Olympus free spins, orbs build a total multiplier that grows through the round. Say your stake is 1.00. On free spin 3 a winning sequence worth 2.00 comes with orbs of x5 and x10: the total becomes 15 and the spin pays 30.00. On free spin 7 a 1.50 win arrives with one x2 orb: the total climbs to 17 and the spin pays 25.50. Gates of Olympus 2500 adds a mode, Free Spins 2, where every orb joins the total even on a spin with no win, and the total applies to all wins.
Spot multipliers on cluster grids
Sugar Rush places its multipliers on grid positions rather than symbols. Every position in a winning cluster is marked. A second win on that spot turns it into x2, and each further win doubles it: x4, x8, x16, x32, x64, up to x128. Sugar Rush 1000 and Super Scatter keep doubling up to x1024. When a cluster covers several multiplier spots, their values are added.
Worked example at 1.00: a cluster of eight hearts pays 1.5x, or 1.50. If it covers one x4 spot and one x8 spot, the multiplier is 4 + 8 = x12 and the cluster pays 18.00. In the base game marks reset every spin; in free spins they stay for the whole round, which is where the big results come from.
Collection multipliers in Big Bass
Big Bass Bonanza uses a different model. During free spins, money fish carry cash values and every fisherman wild collects all of them. Every fourth wild collected retriggers 10 more spins and raises the collection multiplier to 2x, then 3x, then 10x. Worked example at 1.00: three fish showing 2.00, 5.00 and 10.00 collected after the second retrigger pay 17.00 × 3 = 51.00. The same ladder of 2x, 3x and 10x runs through Big Bass Splash, Big Bass Bonanza 1000, the Megaways version and the Christmas edition.

Common misconceptions
- "A x500 orb means a 500x win." It multiplies whatever the sequence won. At a 1.00 stake, a sequence worth 0.25 with a x500 orb pays 125.00, not 500.00.
- "Multipliers always pay." Orbs and bombs do nothing on a spin with no win.
- "Higher multiplier ranges mean a better game." The ranges are balanced by the RTP; they mostly raise volatility.
Practical takeaways
- Check in the rules whether multipliers add or multiply.
- Find out when they reset: per spin, per tumble sequence or per bonus round.
- Remember that the biggest multipliers usually need free spins, so budget for the wait.
Frequently asked questions
What is a multiplier in slots?
A factor that scales a win. A 2.00 win with a x5 multiplier pays 10.00. Slots differ in where multipliers appear, how several combine and when they reset.
Do slot multipliers add or multiply?
It depends on the game. Gates of Olympus orbs, Sweet Bonanza bombs, Sugar Rush spots and Dog House wilds are added. In The Dog House Megaways 1000, wild multipliers in the same win multiply, so x10 and x5 give x50.
When do Sweet Bonanza bombs apply?
Only in free spins. Bombs of 2x to 100x stay until the tumble sequence ends, then their values are added and multiply the total win of that sequence. With no win, they have no effect.
How does the Gates of Olympus total multiplier work?
In free spins, orbs from winning spins are added to a running total that multiplies later wins in the round. In the 2500 edition's Free Spins 2 mode, every orb joins the total even without a win.
How high do Sugar Rush multipliers go?
Spot multipliers double from x2 up to x128 on Sugar Rush and Sugar Rush Xmas, and up to x1024 on Sugar Rush 1000 and Super Scatter. Values on spots covered by one cluster are added.
What are the Big Bass multipliers?
In free spins, every fourth fisherman wild retriggers 10 spins and raises the collection multiplier to 2x, then 3x, then 10x. It applies to the money symbol values each fisherman collects.
Do bigger multipliers mean higher RTP?
No. Multiplier ranges are part of the game's balanced maths. Wider ranges usually mean higher volatility, with more of the return concentrated in rare bonus rounds.
