What Book of Pinata is
Onlyplay released Book of Pinata on 28 May 2024. The setting is a Mexican street party: a piñata donkey, mariachi music, sombreros and bright painted houses. Under the decoration sits a format anyone who has played Book of Ra will recognize: five reels, three rows, ten fixed paylines and a Book symbol that is both wild and the free spins trigger.
Onlyplay lists the game at 95.50% RTP, high volatility and a maximum win of 4,774 times the bet. The provider's own description is mostly about the party mood, so the mechanical details on this page come from the game's built-in rules and from the official demo itself.
The part that makes this slot different is the special symbol rule. In a classic book game, one symbol is chosen at random before the bonus and expands across its reels. Here, any symbol that takes part in a win becomes special, and in the free spins that set keeps growing until the round ends.
How a spin works, step by step
- Set the stake. The bet covers all ten lines; you choose only the total. Available stake levels depend on the casino.
- Spin. Five reels stop on a 5x3 window.
- Line wins. Each of the ten lines is checked for three, four or five matching symbols from the left. There are no two-of-a-kind payouts.
- Wild check. The Book symbol substitutes for paying symbols. It can only land on reels 1, 2 and 3.
- Special payouts. Symbols marked as special are paid separately: if one lands on three or more reels, it pays as a full win on every line.
- Feature check. Three or more Books start the free spins.
Symbols and paytable
Onlyplay's demo server sends the paytable as multiples of the total bet. There are nine paying symbols in four tiers. The Book has no payout of its own.
| Symbol tier | 3 of a kind | 4 of a kind | 5 of a kind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top symbol (1) | 2x | 20x | 200x |
| Second symbol (1) | 1x | 10x | 100x |
| Mid symbols (3) | 0.3x | 1x | 15x |
| Low symbols (4) | 0.1x | 0.4x | 4x |
At a 1.00 stake, three low symbols on a line return 0.10 and five of the top symbol return 200.00. The in-game paytable shows which artwork belongs to each tier, and it displays the values in currency at your current stake, so open it once before you start.
The Book wild and the free spins trigger
The Book does two jobs. On the reels it acts as a wild, filling gaps in line wins for any paying symbol. Collected together, three or more Books on reels 1, 2 and 3 trigger the free spins. Because the Book appears only on the first three reels, a trigger always needs one Book on each of them. In the official demo every trigger awarded 10 free spins, and the rules add that three or more wilds during the round give another 10.
Special symbols explained
The game's rules describe special symbols like this: all symbols that take part in a winning combination at the moment the free spins start become special until the round ends, and any other symbol that wins during the round joins them. Special symbols do not pay on lines; they pay in their own way, much like the expanding symbol of a classic book slot.
In practice, a special symbol pays when it shows up on three or more reels, in any position and on any reels, not only neighboring ones. The win equals its line value for that many symbols, multiplied across all ten lines. A low symbol on three reels pays 0.1x per line, or 1x the bet in total. On five reels it pays 4x per line, or 40x the bet.
We also saw this rule in the base game while testing the official demo: the symbols that won on one spin were treated as special on the next spin, and several 3, 4 and 5 reel special payouts came from that. The game also keeps a separate special set for each stake level, so changing the bet can change which symbols are marked. Before each spin, check which symbols the game currently marks as special.
Worked example: a free spins round
Here is a round we recorded in the demo at a 0.50 stake, rewritten for a 1.00 stake to keep the numbers simple.
- Trigger. Three Books land on reels 1, 2 and 3, and on the same spin a mid symbol wins with four on a line (1x). That mid symbol becomes the first special. 10 free spins start.
- Early spins. A low symbol and another mid symbol win on lines, so the special set grows to three symbols.
- Payoff. The first special lands on four reels. It pays its four-of-a-kind value of 1x on all ten lines: 10x the bet, or 10.00.
- Late spins. The second symbol joins the set, then lands on three reels on the final spin: 1x on ten lines adds 10.00, and a mid special on three reels adds 3.00.
The round finished at about 31x the bet. The structure is the lesson: the more symbols you collect early, the more chances each later spin has to hit a special payout, and premium symbols are where the large multiples live. A top symbol special on five reels pays 200x on ten lines, which explains how the cap reaches 4,774x.
RTP, volatility and the 4,774x cap
Onlyplay lists 95.50% RTP. Over a very long run that means an average return of about 95.50 per 100 staked, or a house edge near 4.5%. That is a theoretical figure, not a session forecast, so confirm it in the help screen of the casino version you open.
The high volatility rating fits what we saw. Base game line wins are small, often below the stake, and most of the value arrives through special payouts and the free spins. Long quiet stretches are normal. The 4,774x maximum caps any single round; at a 1.00 stake that is 4,774.00.
Book of Pinata compared with Book of Ra
The classic Book of Ra Deluxe also uses five reels, three rows and ten lines, with a single special symbol chosen at random for its free games. Book of Pinata replaces that one random pick with a set earned through wins, and it applies special payouts in the base game as well. The trade is RTP: Book of Ra Deluxe is listed at 95.1%, Book of Pinata at 95.50%, so neither is generous by modern standards. Choose Book of Pinata if you want more special symbol action per session; choose the original if you prefer the pure, simple version.
How to test it in the demo
The official demo is a good way to learn the special rule before playing for money (see our demo guide). Useful things to check:
- After each win, note which symbols are marked as special on the next spin.
- Count how many spins pass between free spins triggers; in our test it was a few hundred.
- Open the paytable at your stake and note the top symbol values.
- In the help screen, read the RTP of that version and the minimum and maximum bets.
Bankroll and stake sizing
With high volatility and a below-average RTP, size your stake so your budget covers at least 200 to 300 spins. That gives the free spins a fair chance to show up. Keep in mind that changing the stake may reset the special set you built at the old level. Decide a stop point before you start, and treat any bonus round as a result, not a target to chase.
A simple example: with a budget of 100.00, a 0.50 stake gives you 200 spins, while a 1.00 stake gives only 100. The second option doubles every payout, but it also halves the number of chances you get to reach the free spins, which is where this game keeps most of its value. On a high-volatility title, more spins at a smaller stake usually make for a steadier session.
