Why Book of Dead still fills Canadian lobbies
Rich Wilde arrived in Ancient Egypt on 14 January 2016, and Play'n GO has rarely had a bigger hit since. The game belongs to the provider's Dead series, which later added Legacy of Dead, and it remains a fixture in many slot lobbies that accept Canadians. The appeal is not novelty. It is a tight, old-school ruleset where one feature carries the whole game.
Here is the shape of it. Five reels, three rows and up to ten lines that pay from the left. A book that substitutes for everything and also opens the bonus. Ten free spins in which one randomly chosen symbol can grow to fill entire reels. No tumbling grid, no multiplier trail, no shortcut button. If you have played any Egyptian book slot before, you will feel at home within a handful of spins; if you have not, this is the cleanest place to learn the format.
Throughout this page we use CA$ amounts, mostly a CA$2 total stake on all ten lines, so every number translates straight into what you would see in a Canadian dollar balance.
Spin by spin: what the game checks and in which order
- Line count and coin size. You can activate between one and ten lines, always in sequence, and choose up to 5 coins per line with coin values from 0.01 to 2.00. Play'n GO lists 0.01 as the smallest bet and 100 as the standard top bet; the CAD limits at your casino appear on the rules screen.
- The reels land. Fifteen symbols settle on the 5x3 window.
- Lines are evaluated. Each active line pays left to right starting on reel 1, and only its single highest combination counts.
- The book fills gaps. Acting as a wild, it replaces any other symbol to complete a line.
- Books are counted anywhere. Three or more on screen start the free spins, whether or not they sit on a line.
- The gamble prompt, if switched on. Play'n GO includes a card gamble for this title. After a win you can collect or risk it, unless your operator has disabled the option.
Keep the line maths in mind for everything below. With ten lines at CA$2 total, each line carries CA$0.20, and every multiplier in the paytable applies to that line bet, not to the whole stake.
Paytable in line bets
Four high-value characters from the Egyptian theme (Play'n GO's artwork names Rich Wilde, Osiris and Anubis among them), five card ranks and the book make up the reel set. The official rules sheet prices them like this, shown here from two symbols up to five:
| Symbol group | x2 | x3 | x4 | x5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Highest character | 10x | 100x | 1,000x | 5,000x |
| Second character | 5x | 40x | 400x | 2,000x |
| Third and fourth characters | 5x | 30x | 100x | 750x |
| Two higher card ranks | nothing | 5x | 40x | 150x |
| Three lower card ranks | nothing | 5x | 25x | 100x |
| Book (scatter award) | nothing | 2 | 20 | 200 |
In CA$ terms at a CA$0.20 line bet, two of the top character pay CA$2, and five of them on one line pay CA$1,000. The card ranks never pay for a pair, while every character does, which is why two-symbol hits on the left of the screen are worth watching. One caution on the book row: the rules sheet is not fully explicit about whether those 2, 20 and 200 values multiply the line bet or the total bet, so open the in-game paytable and read the amount shown at your own stake.
One symbol, two jobs
The book is the reason a single spin in this game can feel loaded. As a wild it slots into any line, so a character on reel 1 and a book on reel 2 can start a paying combination. As a scatter it works anywhere, so three books scattered across the screen trigger the feature regardless of lines. A line of five books is treated as the top wild combination, paid at the same rate as five of the highest character.
The practical upshot: a spin that lands three books can pay a line win through the wild, a scatter award on top, and then hand you the bonus. Those combined moments are what most sessions remember.
The free spins round and the expanding symbol
Hit three or more books and you collect 10 free spins. Ahead of the opening spin, the game draws a regular symbol at random and makes it the special expanding symbol for the entire feature. From then on the rules run in a fixed order:
- Normal line wins pay first, the same way as in the base game.
- After that, the special symbol spreads to cover all three rows of its reel, but only if doing so creates an extra win on active lines.
- An expanded symbol ignores adjacency. A special symbol on reels 2, 3 and 5 counts as a three-symbol win.
- Another trio of books, or more, during the bonus retriggers another 10 spins, while the chosen symbol stays locked in.
The adjacency exception is what makes the bonus dangerous in the good sense. Expanded reels pay on every active line at once, so three widely spaced symbols can be worth more than a strong base-game spin. It also means running fewer than ten lines shrinks the feature, because an expansion pays only on lines you activated.
CA$ worked example: what an expansion is worth
Stake: CA$2 on all ten lines, CA$0.20 per line. The draw before the bonus picks the second-highest character.
- It lands on three reels. Say reels 1, 2 and 4. Each expands, every line now shows three of that symbol, and each line pays 40 x CA$0.20 = CA$8. Ten lines make CA$80, or 40 times your stake, from one free spin.
- It lands on four reels. Each line pays 400 x CA$0.20 = CA$80, and ten lines add up to CA$800, or 400 times the stake.
- The top character on all five reels. If the draw had picked the highest character and it filled the screen, each line would pay 5,000 x CA$0.20 = CA$1,000. Ten lines give CA$10,000, which is exactly 5,000 times CA$2 and therefore the game's ceiling.
Now the other end. Suppose a card rank is drawn and expands across three reels: each line pays 5 x CA$0.20 = CA$1, so the spin returns CA$10, five times the stake. Which symbol gets picked before spin one decides the outcome more than any other factor, and you have no control over it. That randomness is the heart of the game's volatility: Play'n GO rates it high, 7 on its own scale.
Five RTP settings and what they cost you
Play'n GO offers casinos five versions of the game, set to 96.21%, 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% and 84.18%. The 96.21% build is the default, but nothing on the reels tells you which one is loaded. Only the rules screen does. Our RTP guide covers the theory; the practical version for a Canadian balance looks like this:
| Build | Average return per CA$100 wagered | Average cost per CA$100 wagered |
|---|---|---|
| 96.21% | CA$96.21 | CA$3.79 |
| 94.25% | CA$94.25 | CA$5.75 |
| 91.25% | CA$91.25 | CA$8.75 |
| 87.25% | CA$87.25 | CA$12.75 |
| 84.18% | CA$84.18 | CA$15.82 |
These are long-run averages over enormous numbers of spins, not session forecasts. Still, the lowest build costs about four times as much per dollar wagered as the default one, which is a strong reason to check before you play.
How it lines up against Book of Ra
Novomatic's Book of Ra uses the same core idea: a book that doubles as wild and scatter and a bonus built around one expanding symbol. The confirmed differences come down to a few figures. Book of Ra dates from 2005, runs 9 lines and has a 92.13% default return, with 10 free games. Book of Dead came eleven years later, runs up to 10 lines, returns 96.21% by default and retriggers for another 10 spins. Both cap a five-symbol premium line at 5,000x the line bet. For the same mechanic, the newer game hands back roughly four more cents on every dollar over the long run.
Playing Book of Dead from Canada
Gambling in Canada is regulated province by province. Ontario and Alberta have their own regulated online markets, and this edition of PaylinePilot is not aimed at players there. Elsewhere, the minimum age is 19, or 18 in Quebec, Manitoba and Alberta. Follow the rules of your own province, and never use tools that hide your location to get around a block.
If you want a CAD balance, our list of online casinos for Canada compares currencies, minimum deposits and withdrawal times, and the Interac casino guide explains how deposits and cash-outs work with Canada's most familiar bank transfer. Book of Dead is a Play'n GO title, so confirm it is in the lobby and check its RTP line before you deposit.
Getting value from the free demo
The practice version on this page is Play'n GO's own, running on play credits with the real game rules. Our demo guide has a general method; for this slot we suggest:
- Open the paytable at a stake equivalent to what you would play in CAD and note the amounts for two characters and for each book count.
- Run several hundred spins and record how many it takes to see three books. The gap is often long.
- For each bonus, write down the drawn symbol and how many reels it covered. A short log shows how strongly the draw drives the payout.
- Try one block of spins on five lines and compare how expansions pay against ten lines.
Budget and stake size
A high-volatility book slot rewards patience and punishes oversized bets. Choose a stake that lets your budget cover a few hundred spins; at CA$2 per spin that means a few hundred dollars, so at a CA$100 budget something like CA$0.20 to CA$0.40 a spin is more realistic. Keep all ten lines active, since cutting lines saves money per spin but weakens the expanding symbol. Set a loss limit and a time limit before the first spin, and leave the gamble feature alone so your results stay tied to the published maths.
Where to play Book of Dead in Canadian dollars
Questions from Canadian players
What RTP does Book of Dead run at Canadian casinos?
Play'n GO's default build returns 96.21%, but casinos can choose 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% or 84.18% instead. The game looks the same in every version, so open the rules screen at your casino and read the RTP line before you deposit any Canadian dollars.
What starts the Book of Dead free spins?
Three or more books in any position give you 10 free spins. A further set of three or more inside the feature tops it up by 10, and the expanding symbol picked at the start stays the same for the whole feature.
What does the expanding symbol pay at a CA$2 stake?
With ten lines at CA$0.20 each, the second-highest character expanding on three reels pays CA$80, and on four reels CA$800. The top character filling all five reels pays CA$10,000, which matches the 5,000x cap.
What is the biggest possible win in Book of Dead?
Wins are capped at 5,000 times the total stake. At CA$1 per spin that ceiling is CA$5,000, reached when the top character covers all five reels on all ten lines in free spins.
Can I buy my way into the Book of Dead bonus?
No such option exists in this game. The only way into the free spins is landing three or more books, whether on a normal spin or as a retrigger while the bonus is running.
Who can play Book of Dead for real money in Canada?
Gambling is regulated by each province. You must be 19, or 18 in Quebec, Manitoba and Alberta. This edition does not target Ontario or Alberta, which run their own regulated markets. Follow your provincial rules and never bypass blocks.
Should I use the gamble feature?
It is optional and some casinos switch it off. Gambling a win on a card guess adds risk on top of an already high volatility game, so many players skip it to keep sessions in line with the published RTP.
