Our view

Few book slots are as easy to learn and as hard to predict. The 96.21% default return is strong for the genre, yet nearly all the excitement depends on which symbol the free spins hand you. Read the RTP line before your first cedi goes in, because some operators load builds that drop to 84.18%.

What we like
  • 96.21% return in the default build, clearly ahead of older book games
  • Expanded symbols pay on every active line without needing neighbours
  • Three books inside the bonus add a fresh batch of 10 spins
  • Simple ten-line layout you can learn in a single sitting
What to keep in mind
  • High volatility, so many bonus rounds return only a few times the stake
  • Operators may choose builds as low as 84.18%
  • There is no way to purchase the feature

Why this book slot is worth knowing

Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead arrived from Play'n GO on 14 January 2016 and went on to become the studio's signature title. Rich Wilde is a recurring adventurer in the provider's catalogue, and this time his trip takes him to Ancient Egypt. Play'n GO places the game in its Dead series, which was later joined by Legacy of Dead.

You will not find tumbling reels, progressive meters or a buy button here. The game gives you a 5x3 window, up to ten paylines paying from left to right, a single book that covers both wild and scatter duties, and one bonus round. That plainness is the appeal: once you understand how the expanding symbol behaves during free spins, you understand the whole game.

The provider labels it high volatility and gives it 7 on its own internal scale. Expect plenty of spins that return nothing or a few pesewas, then occasional rounds that change your balance in one go.

Setting a cedi stake: lines, coins and coin value

Your bet is built from three settings. You choose how many lines to play (up to 10, switched on in numerical order), the coins placed per line, with a limit of five, and a coin size between 0.01 and 2.00. The provider's standard setup accepts bets from 0.01 up to 100, and the exact cedi limits your operator allows appear in the rules screen of the build you open.

Every paytable figure is a multiple of the bet on a single line, so the maths gets easier if you keep all ten lines on. With a GH₵2 total stake on ten lines, each line carries GH₵0.20, or twenty pesewas. That is the stake we use for every cedi figure on this page.

What happens when you press spin

  1. The reels stop. Five reels land on a window three symbols high.
  2. Lines are read from the left. A win must start on reel 1 and run across adjacent reels on an active line. Only the highest win on each line is paid.
  3. The book fills gaps. The rules state that it is wild and substitutes for every other symbol, so it can complete a line of premiums or card ranks.
  4. Books are counted as scatters. Three or more anywhere in view start 10 free spins.
  5. You may gamble. The provider includes a gamble option here, so a win can be risked on a card guess or simply collected. Your operator can disable it.

The paytable in cedis at GH₵0.20 per line

Play'n GO's official rules sheet sets the multipliers below. We have added what each one pays when every line carries GH₵0.20. The sheet does not name individual premium symbols, so they are listed by tier; the provider's artwork includes Rich Wilde, Osiris and Anubis among the characters.

SymbolFiveFourThreeTwo
Top premium (HP4)5,000x = GH₵1,0001,000x = GH₵200100x = GH₵2010x = GH₵2
Premium HP32,000x = GH₵400400x = GH₵8040x = GH₵85x = GH₵1
Premiums HP2 and HP1750x = GH₵150100x = GH₵2030x = GH₵65x = GH₵1
Two highest card ranks150x = GH₵3040x = GH₵85x = GH₵1nothing
Three lowest card ranks100x = GH₵2025x = GH₵55x = GH₵1nothing

Notice that all four premiums already pay for a pair, which keeps small wins coming in the base game, while card ranks need at least three. Books landing as scatters also have a separate prize: 2 for three, 20 for four, 200 for five. The rules sheet leaves its basis unclear, so look at the in-game paytable to learn if that prize is based on your line bet or your full stake.

The book: a wild that also opens the bonus

Think of the book as two tools in one tile. On a payline it stands in for anything, so a premium on the first reel next to a book on the second already counts as a pair. Across the whole screen it acts as a scatter, so position does not matter for the trigger. Five books along one line are valued exactly like five of the top premium.

Because of that double role, one spin can land a line win with books helping as wilds and still count those same books towards the feature. Those are the spins that usually rescue a quiet session.

Inside the ten free spins

The feature starts when three books or more appear, giving you 10 free spins. Before the reels turn, a random draw picks one regular symbol and turns it into the special expanding symbol for the rest of the round. The rules then apply in a fixed order:

  • Normal line wins are settled first, just as they would be outside the bonus.
  • Then the picked symbol may stretch over its full reel, though only when the stretch creates an extra win on active lines.
  • Once expanded, the symbol pays on reels that are not next to each other, so reels 2, 3 and 5 still count as three of a kind.
  • Landing three or more books again gives another 10 spins, and the chosen symbol stays unchanged.

That third point is what makes the round dangerous in a good way. An expanded reel covers every line passing through it, and with adjacency switched off, a few scattered copies can fill all ten lines at once.

Three bonus rounds worked out in cedis

Keep the GH₵2 total stake, GH₵0.20 per line, and look at how differently the same feature can end depending on the draw.

  • A card rank is chosen. It lands on reels 1, 2 and 4 and expands. Each line now holds three of that rank, worth 5 x GH₵0.20 = GH₵1, so ten lines return GH₵10. That is five times your stake: pleasant, but closer to the price of a trotro ride across Accra than a big result.
  • Premium HP1 is chosen. It shows up on reels 1, 3, 4 and 5. Four expanded reels pay 100 x GH₵0.20 = GH₵20 per line, or GH₵200 for the spin, a hundred times the stake. If it later fills all five reels, the spin is worth 750 x GH₵0.20 x 10 = GH₵1,500.
  • The top premium is chosen and covers every reel. Each line pays 5,000 x GH₵0.20 = GH₵1,000, and ten lines add up to GH₵10,000. That is exactly 5,000 times GH₵2, the cap Play'n GO places on the game, so no single outcome can pay more.

The same feature can return GH₵10 or GH₵10,000, and the deciding moment happens before you see a single free spin. You have no influence over the draw, which is why a calm budget matters more here than in slots with steadier bonuses.

Five RTP builds and what they cost per GH₵100

Play'n GO supplies operators with five return settings: 96.21%, which is the default, plus 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% and 84.18%. The reels look the same in all of them. Over a long run, the theoretical cost of every GH₵100 you stake looks like this (our RTP guide explains the idea):

BuildAverage return per GH₵100Average cost per GH₵100
96.21%GH₵96.21GH₵3.79
94.25%GH₵94.25GH₵5.75
91.25%GH₵91.25GH₵8.75
87.25%GH₵87.25GH₵12.75
84.18%GH₵84.18GH₵15.82

The bottom build costs a little over four times as much as the default. A single evening is dominated by luck, but across months of play this setting outweighs almost everything else. Pair that with the high volatility label and you can see why a short run tells you very little: most of the expected value sits in rare bonus rounds with a strong symbol spread over several reels.

For context, the original Book of Ra uses the same wild-scatter book idea on 9 lines with a 92.13% default return, so Book of Dead gives back roughly four points more in its standard build.

Practise in the demo and read the rules screen

You can practise for free here: the demo is the provider's official practice mode with virtual credits, so it costs you nothing beyond the data bundle. Our demo guide covers the basics; for this title, a focused routine works best:

  • Open the paytable before spinning and confirm how the book award is calculated in that build.
  • Spin a few hundred times and count how long each wait for three books lasts.
  • For every bonus, note which symbol was picked and the number of reels it ended up covering.
  • When you later play for real money, check the RTP figure and the stake limits shown in the rules of the operator's version.

Bankroll habits and the rules in Ghana

Choose your stake from your budget, not the other way round. If you set aside GH₵300 and want around 300 spins, GH₵1 per spin is the ceiling, and with a slot this swingy a smaller figure is kinder. Cutting the number of lines lowers the cost of each spin, but the expanding symbol only pays on active lines, so the bonus loses more value than the base game saves. Decide on a stop point before you top up from your MoMo wallet, and skip the gamble button so your results track the game's normal maths.

Questions from players in Ghana

What RTP does Book of Dead have in Ghana?

The default setting is 96.21%, but lower builds of 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% and 84.18% exist too. The operator picks which one runs, so open the game rules of the version you load to see the exact figure before staking cedis.

How do you trigger free spins in Book of Dead?

Land three or more book symbols anywhere on the reels. You receive 10 free spins with one randomly chosen expanding symbol. Three or more books during the round add 10 more spins while the same chosen symbol carries on.

How much can you win on a GH₵2 stake?

The game is capped at 5,000 times the stake, so a GH₵2 spin can return at most GH₵10,000. That happens when the top premium is the special symbol and expands across all five reels on ten lines.

Does the expanding symbol need adjacent reels?

No. During free spins, once the special symbol expands it pays on any reels, adjacent or not. Copies on reels 2, 4 and 5 form a three-symbol win on every active line, after normal wins have been paid.

Can you buy the Book of Dead bonus?

No. The bonus round only comes from landing three or more books, either in the base game or as a retrigger inside free spins. There is no option to pay for direct entry.

Who regulates online slots in Ghana?

The Gaming Commission of Ghana licenses casino, sports betting and online operators under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Players must be 18 or older, and licensed operators verify identity with the Ghana Card.

Can I play Book of Dead free?

Yes. This page loads Play'n GO's official practice version with virtual credits. It is a good way to read the paytable, watch how the expanding symbol behaves and learn how long gaps between bonuses can be.
