Legacy of Dead at a glance for Canadian players
Play'n GO put Legacy of Dead out on 2 January 2020. That was four years on from Book of Dead, the game that made the studio's Egyptian book format famous. The adventurer is gone from the reels. This time a greedy king, freed from the Book of the Dead, haunts his burial chamber and wants his treasure returned. The reels around him show Horus, Tutankhamun, Anubis and a mummy, with the card ranks 10 to A filling the low end.
Underneath the artwork it is a straightforward line slot: five reels, ten lines paying from the leftmost reel, and one special symbol carrying two jobs. What sets it apart is the bonus. Instead of a single expanding symbol for the whole feature, the game hands you an extra one each time the round retriggers, so a long feature can run with two, three or more symbols that spread across their reels.
Play'n GO calls the game high volatility and gives it 8 on its in-house scale. The top win is capped at 5,000 times the stake, which the studio also writes as 250,000 coins.
Gambling rules in Canada in brief
Each province runs or licenses gambling within its own borders, so the rules depend on where you live. Ontario and Alberta have their own regulated online markets, and this edition of PaylinePilot is not aimed at players there. The legal age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Alberta, Quebec and Manitoba. Our guide to online casinos for Canada covers which operators accept CAD accounts, and the Interac casino page explains deposits and withdrawals with that method.
Setting up a spin and what happens next
- Choose your lines. You can play one to ten lines; they switch on in order, starting with line 1.
- Choose coins and coin value. Each line takes up to 5 coins, and a coin can be worth 0.01 to 2.00 in your currency. The provider quotes a minimum bet of 0.01 and a standard maximum of 100, so in a CAD account that means CA$0.01 up to CA$100 where the operator keeps the default limits.
- Press spin. All five reels come to rest.
- Lines are scored. Any matching run starting on reel 1 pays on each active line.
- The tomb fills gaps. As a wild it stands in for every other symbol.
- Tombs are counted. Three or more anywhere start the free spins.
- Gamble, if offered. Play'n GO includes a gamble option after wins, though the casino may switch it off.
With all ten lines on and a CA$2 total bet, every line carries CA$0.20. The paytable below multiplies that line bet, not the full stake.
Paytable in line bet multiples
Values taken from Play'n GO's rules sheet, read from the shortest win to the longest:
| Symbol | 2 on a line | 3 on a line | 4 on a line | 5 on a line |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mummy | 10x | 100x | 1,000x | 5,000x |
| Tomb wild | 10x | 100x | 1,000x | 5,000x |
| Anubis | 5x | 30x | 300x | 1,600x |
| Horus or Tutankhamun | 5x | 20x | 80x | 600x |
| A or K | none | 5x | 30x | 120x |
| 10, J or Q | none | 5x | 20x | 80x |
At CA$0.20 a line, two mummies return CA$2, three Anubis CA$6 and five aces CA$24. Compared with Book of Dead, the second and third premium tiers are trimmed (1,600x instead of 2,000x, and 600x instead of 750x for five). If the tombs carry their own scatter award in your build, it appears in the in-game paytable, since the rules sheet does not list one.
One symbol, two roles: the tomb
The tomb plays the part the book played in the original. On a payline it completes combinations for any other symbol, which matters most for the premiums because they already pay from two. Off the lines it counts as a scatter, so position does not matter: three anywhere is enough. Both things can happen on one spin, giving you a line win and an entry ticket to the feature together.
Free spins with growing expanding symbols
Landing three or more tombs opens 8 free spins. Here is how the round is built:
- Before the first spin, the game draws one regular symbol at random to act as the special expanding symbol. The tomb is never chosen.
- When that symbol appears in sufficient number, it grows to fill every position on the reels where it landed.
- Expanded reels count as matches even when they are not side by side.
- Three or more tombs inside the round award a further 8 spins and draw an extra special symbol, while the earlier ones keep working.
No upper limit on retriggers appears in the rules, which is why Play'n GO calls the spin count potentially unlimited. In practice that means each retrigger pays twice: more spins, and one more symbol that can cover whole reels.
A worked bonus round at CA$2
Take a CA$2 bet across ten lines, so CA$0.20 per line, and follow an imagined round from start to finish.
- Opening draw: J. A low pick. When J expands on three reels, each line shows three of a kind: 5 x CA$0.20 = CA$1 per line, CA$10 for the spin, five times your bet.
- Retrigger: Anubis joins. Three tombs land, 8 spins are added, and Anubis is drawn as the second special symbol. J stays active too.
- A strong spin. Anubis lands on reels 1, 2, 4 and 5 and expands. Four of a kind on every line pays 300 x CA$0.20 = CA$60 per line, CA$600 for the spin, which is 300 times the stake. J showing on only two reels adds nothing, because card ranks need three.
- The top end. A mummy across all five reels pays 5,000 x CA$0.20 on each of ten lines, CA$10,000, exactly the 5,000x cap at CA$2.
In the older game, that opening J would have been your only special symbol for the whole feature. Here the retrigger turned a modest round into a large one.
Legacy of Dead next to Book of Dead
| Feature | Book of Dead | Legacy of Dead |
|---|---|---|
| Released | 2016 | 2020 |
| Default RTP | 96.21% | 96.58% |
| Provider volatility score | 7, high | 8, high |
| Spins at the start | 10 | 8 |
| What a retrigger gives | 10 spins, same symbol | 8 spins plus a new symbol |
| Best line pay | 5,000x line bet | 5,000x line bet |
| Maximum win | 5,000x stake | 5,000x stake |
Pick Book of Dead if you prefer one symbol and a longer opening. Pick Legacy of Dead if you would rather trade two spins for a feature that can gain strength as it goes. For the Novomatic take on the same format, see Book of Ra.
How much the draw is worth
The special symbol decides almost everything, and the gap between picks is wide. At CA$2 on ten lines, a card rank covering three reels returns CA$10, Horus or Tutankhamun CA$40, Anubis CA$60 and the mummy CA$200. Stretch that to all five reels and the spread grows to CA$160 for 10, J or Q, CA$240 for A or K, CA$1,200 for Horus or Tutankhamun, CA$3,200 for Anubis and CA$10,000 for the mummy.
That is why retriggers feel so different here. A poor first pick is not final, and the rare rounds holding two or three premium specials at once are where the top results live. None of this shifts the long-term return, which is set by the RTP build, but it changes how individual rounds play out. Between features, expect mostly small line hits, with the two-symbol premium pays doing the steady work.
RTP versions and why they matter
Play'n GO supplies five builds: 96.58% as the default, plus 94.51%, 91.51%, 87.56% and 84.55%. The casino decides which one you get. Over a long run, CA$100 wagered on the default version is expected to cost about CA$3.42, while the lowest build would cost about CA$15.45 on the same amount. Our RTP explainer shows where the figure sits in the rules screen.
Trying the demo first
Above you will find Play'n GO's official practice version running on play credits, so nothing comes out of your balance. A few things worth checking during a test session (our demo guide has more):
- Count the base spins between features to get a feel for the gaps.
- Note which symbols the bonus draws and whether retriggers bring premiums or card ranks.
- Open the paytable to see the two-symbol premium pays at your stake and any tomb scatter award.
- Find the RTP line and the bet limits in the rules screen of that build.
Keeping your bankroll in shape
For a high-volatility game, pick a stake that lets your balance last several hundred spins rather than a few dozen. Cutting lines lowers the cost per spin, yet the bonus only scores on lines you have switched on, so it loses more value than you save. Decide on a loss limit and a cash-out point in advance, and treat the gamble button as an extra risk you can skip. Where to play Legacy of Dead in Canadian dollars
Questions from Canadian players
What RTP does Legacy of Dead have at Canadian casinos?
The default build returns 96.58%. Play'n GO also offers versions at 94.51%, 91.51%, 87.56% and 84.55%, and each casino picks one. Open the game rules before you play in CAD to see which figure applies.
How do the free spins work in Legacy of Dead?
Three or more tombs give 8 free spins with one randomly drawn expanding symbol. Landing three or more tombs again adds 8 spins and draws an additional expanding symbol, while the earlier ones remain active.
What is the biggest possible win?
The cap is 5,000 times the stake, or 250,000 coins in Play'n GO's terms. At a CA$2 bet that equals CA$10,000, reached by mummies covering all five reels on all ten lines.
Should I play Legacy of Dead or Book of Dead?
Choose by what you value. The newer game returns 96.58% by default versus 96.21% and adds symbols when the round retriggers. The older one opens with 10 spins rather than 8 and scores a point lower, 7 versus 8, on Play'n GO's volatility scale.
Can I buy the bonus in Legacy of Dead?
No. There is no feature purchase. The only way into the free spins is to land three or more tomb scatters on a spin, either in the base game or during the round for a retrigger.
Who can play Legacy of Dead for real money in Canada?
Gambling is regulated province by province. You must be 19, or 18 in Alberta, Quebec and Manitoba. Ontario and Alberta run their own regulated markets, and this edition is not aimed at players in those provinces.
