The second chapter of the Dead series
Play'n GO launched Legacy of Dead on 2 January 2020, four years after Book of Dead made the series famous. Rich Wilde stays out of this one. The theme centres on a greedy king whose spirit has slipped out of the Book of the Dead and is determined to reclaim his treasure. On the reels you meet Horus, Tutankhamun, Anubis and a mummy, with card ranks from 10 up to A filling the lower slots.
Underneath the new artwork sits a familiar engine: five reels, up to ten paylines paying left to right, a tomb that is both wild and scatter, and a free spins round built around expanding symbols. The difference you will feel lies in what retriggers do, which we cover in detail below.
Play'n GO rates the game high volatility, 8 on its internal scale, a step above its predecessor. Wins are capped at 5,000 times the stake, a figure the provider also quotes as 250,000 coins.
Building your stake in cedis
Three dials decide the cost of a spin. First the number of lines, up to 10 and always activated in order. Then the coins per line, a maximum of five. Finally the coin value, adjustable from 0.01 to 2.00. Play'n GO's standard range starts at 0.01 and tops out at 100, and the cedi limits your operator permits are listed in the game rules.
For the examples on this page we use a GH₵5 total stake spread over all ten lines. That puts GH₵0.50, fifty pesewas, on each line, and every multiplier in the paytable applies to that line bet.
One base-game spin in order
- Reels settle. All five reels come to rest.
- Lines pay from the left. Matching symbols must begin on reel 1 and continue on neighbouring reels along an active line.
- Tombs substitute. The tomb counts as wild and replaces every other symbol to complete a line.
- Tombs trigger. With three or more tombs anywhere in view, you move into 8 free spins.
- Gamble, if offered. The provider includes a gamble option after wins. You can take the money or risk it, and operators are free to switch the option off.
Paytable at GH₵0.50 per line
The multipliers come from Play'n GO's official rules sheet. Next to each one we show the cedi value at fifty pesewas per line.
| Symbol | Five | Four | Three | Two |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tomb (wild) | 5,000x = GH₵2,500 | 1,000x = GH₵500 | 100x = GH₵50 | 10x = GH₵5 |
| Mummy | 5,000x = GH₵2,500 | 1,000x = GH₵500 | 100x = GH₵50 | 10x = GH₵5 |
| Anubis | 1,600x = GH₵800 | 300x = GH₵150 | 30x = GH₵15 | 5x = GH₵2.50 |
| Tutankhamun | 600x = GH₵300 | 80x = GH₵40 | 20x = GH₵10 | 5x = GH₵2.50 |
| Horus | 600x = GH₵300 | 80x = GH₵40 | 20x = GH₵10 | 5x = GH₵2.50 |
| A and K | 120x = GH₵60 | 30x = GH₵15 | 5x = GH₵2.50 | nothing |
| Q, J and 10 | 80x = GH₵40 | 20x = GH₵10 | 5x = GH₵2.50 | nothing |
The mummy is the star of the set and pays the same as a line of wild tombs. Compared with Book of Dead, the middle of the table is a little leaner: the second-best premium tops out at 1,600x rather than 2,000x, and the two lower characters at 600x rather than 750x. If the tombs carry a scatter award of their own, the in-game paytable is where it is shown; the rules sheet does not list one.
The tomb as wild and scatter
Like the book in the earlier game, the tomb works on two levels. On a line it replaces any symbol, which is handy for the premiums because a single character beside a tomb already forms a paying pair. Across the screen it counts as a scatter, so three tombs in any positions start the bonus. That means one spin can deliver a line win built with a tomb and the feature trigger together.
Free spins that gain symbols as they go
Three tombs or more award 8 free spins. From that point the rules run like this:
- A regular symbol is drawn at random as the special expanding symbol. The tomb itself is never chosen.
- When enough copies of that symbol land, they spread to fill their entire reels. The rules screen states how many are needed.
- Expanded reels do not have to touch each other to create extra wins across the lines.
- Three or more tombs during the bonus add 8 more spins, and a further special symbol is drawn on top of the existing one.
Play'n GO describes the possible number of free spins as unlimited, since no ceiling on retriggers is stated. In practice, every retrigger does two jobs at once: it buys time and it adds a fresh candidate for a big expansion. In Book of Dead the first draw is the only draw.
A worked bonus round at GH₵5
Here is how one round could unfold at GH₵0.50 per line, step by step. The symbols are illustrative; the maths follows the paytable exactly.
- Opening draw: K. A card rank is a modest pick. When K lands on reels 1, 2 and 5 and expands, each line shows three K: 5 x GH₵0.50 = GH₵2.50 per line, or GH₵25 across ten lines. That is five times the stake.
- First retrigger: Anubis joins. Three tombs bring 8 more spins and a second special symbol. Some spins later, Anubis appears on reels 1, 3, 4 and 5. Four expanded reels pay 300 x GH₵0.50 = GH₵150 per line, so the spin returns GH₵1,500, or 300 times your GH₵5.
- Second retrigger: the mummy joins. Now three symbols are live. The mummy appearing on reels 2, 3 and 4 is worth 100 x GH₵0.50 x 10 = GH₵500.
- The ceiling. If the mummy ever covers all five reels, each line pays 5,000 x GH₵0.50 = GH₵2,500 and ten lines make GH₵25,000. That is precisely 5,000 times GH₵5, the game's cap.
Without the retriggers, that round would have stayed a K round worth a few multiples of the stake. That is the essence of Legacy of Dead: a weak opening draw is not the end of the bonus, though most rounds will still finish without a premium on several reels.
How the sequel differs from Book of Dead
| Feature | This game | Book of Dead |
|---|---|---|
| Released | 2020 | 2016 |
| Default RTP | 96.58% | 96.21% |
| Provider volatility score | High, 8 | High, 7 |
| Spins at trigger | 8 | 10 |
| On retrigger | 8 spins and an extra special symbol | 10 spins, symbol unchanged |
| Five top premiums | 5,000x line bet | 5,000x line bet |
| Cap | 5,000x stake | 5,000x stake |
So the sequel gives up two opening spins and some mid-table value in exchange for a feature that can build on itself. If a fixed single symbol and ten starting spins suit you better, Book of Dead is the cleaner choice. For the older Novomatic version of the book idea, see Book of Ra.
Five RTP builds in cedis
Play'n GO offers operators five return settings. The table shows what each one means, on average, for every GH₵100 you stake over a long period (see our RTP guide for the background):
| Build | Average cost per GH₵100 |
|---|---|
| 96.58% (default) | GH₵3.42 |
| 94.51% | GH₵5.49 |
| 91.51% | GH₵8.49 |
| 87.56% | GH₵12.44 |
| 84.55% | GH₵15.45 |
The spread between top and bottom is about GH₵12 per GH₵100 wagered, far wider than the gap between most rival slots. Since the reels look identical in every build, the rules screen is the only place to find out which one you are on.
Demo, budget and playing legally in Ghana
The practice version on this page runs on virtual credits supplied by Play'n GO. Our demo guide explains the basics. Use it to check the paytable values at your chosen stake, see how many tombs actually arrive per hundred spins and watch whether retriggers hand you a character or a card. When you move to real money, confirm the RTP line and the stake limits in the operator's build first.
With a game this volatile, choose a stake your balance can sustain for several hundred spins. A GH₵200 budget comfortably covers around 400 spins at GH₵0.50, while GH₵5 spins would burn through it in forty. Fewer lines make each spin cheaper, but expanded symbols only pay on active lines, so the feature loses more than you save. Set your limit before you top up from your MoMo wallet and treat the gamble button as extra risk, not part of the plan.

Where to play Legacy of Dead with cedis
Questions from players in Ghana
Which RTP builds does Legacy of Dead use?
Play'n GO's default build returns 96.58%. Operators can instead run 94.51%, 91.51%, 87.56% or 84.55%, and the game looks the same in each. Open the game rules after loading it to see which figure applies.
How many free spins does Legacy of Dead give?
Three or more tombs start 8 free spins. Every retrigger during the round adds 8 more and draws an extra special expanding symbol, so the bonus can keep growing while tombs keep landing.
What is the biggest possible win on a GH₵5 stake?
The cap is 5,000 times the stake, so a GH₵5 spin can return up to GH₵25,000. Reaching it requires the mummy, the top symbol, to fill all five reels across ten active lines.
Is Legacy of Dead better than Book of Dead?
It depends on taste. Legacy of Dead has a higher default RTP of 96.58% and adds a new expanding symbol with each retrigger, but it opens with 8 spins instead of 10 and rates one step higher on volatility.
Can the tomb be the special expanding symbol?
No. The special symbol is always drawn from the regular symbols. The tomb keeps its own roles as the wild on paylines and the scatter that starts or extends the free spins.
Can I buy the free spins in Legacy of Dead?
No purchase option exists. The only route into the bonus is landing three or more tombs, and the only way to extend it is landing three or more again during the round.
Is it legal to play slots online in Ghana?
Online operators in Ghana are licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Players must be at least 18, and licensed operators verify accounts with the Ghana Card.
