Mustang Gold in brief

Pragmatic Play announced Mustang Gold on 17 January 2019: a frontier slot with cowboys, cowgirls and wild horses, played on a 5x3 grid with 25 fixed lines. The game is built around a collect mechanic. Cash symbols drop onto reels 1 to 4, a collector can only appear on reel 5, and the two have to meet in the same spin for the cash to count. A sequel, Mustang Gold Megaways, followed in 2024 on a much bigger grid; this review covers the 2019 game.

The jump from four to five of a kind is huge: ₹200 against ₹2,000 for the top symbol. Since the wild never lands on reel 1, every paying line has to start with a real symbol there.

Cash symbols and the collector

Cash symbols only land on the first four reels. Each shows either the word JACKPOT or one of thirteen values. At a ₹100 stake:

None of that is paid unless a collector stops on reel 5 in the same spin. When it does, all visible values are added together, a pure money collect with no multipliers on top. Expect plenty of spins where good cash values sit on the first four reels and the last reel stops on something else; that tension is the game's whole design.

The jackpot pick game

If a collector lands while one or more JACKPOT cash symbols are showing, you play one pick game for each of them, in turn. You uncover symbols until three of the same jackpot match, and that prize is yours. The four prizes, in rupees at two common stakes:

The smallest outcome is still 50x, so a collected JACKPOT symbol is always a strong spin. Two of them collected together mean two separate pick games, played one after the other, and each can land on any of the four prizes.

Worked example at ₹20 a spin

Reels 1 to 4 show cash values of 8x, 3x, 12x and 2x, plus one JACKPOT. A collector lands on reel 5. The four values make 25x, which is ₹500. Then the pick game runs and you match three of the 200x jackpot, worth ₹4,000. The spin pays ₹4,500, or 225 times your stake.

Had reel 5 stopped on a card symbol, those cash symbols would have returned zero. That single position is the difference between ₹0 and ₹4,500.

Free spins: more cash, more collectors

Landing three scatters across the middle reels returns your bet once and start 8 free spins. The bonus uses special reels that carry extra cash symbols and extra collectors, so collections come round more often and JACKPOT symbols get more chances to be picked up. Landing three scatters again during the round adds 8 more spins, as many times as it happens.

Good rounds tend to come from repetition rather than one big hit: several collects of mid-range values and, with luck, a pick game or two. At ₹20 a spin, three collects of 15x, 20x and 10x already add up to ₹900 before any line wins.

Where the wild fits in

The wild covers reels 2 to 5 and only helps line wins. It cannot stand in for a cash symbol, a scatter or the collector, so a wild on reel 5 never pays out the cash on screen. Think of it as a separate system: lines on one side, the collect feature on the other, both added up at the end of a spin.

A rupee example shows its value on lines. Take a ₹50 spin where the second premium starts the line, two wilds fill the middle positions of reels 2 and 3, and two more of that premium complete reels 4 and 5. Five on a line pays ₹600. Swap the last symbol for a card and the same line drops to the four-symbol value, ₹100. One position again decides a sixfold difference.

The scatter works on its own track as well. Three of them on the middle reels pay your bet once wherever they sit, independent of lines, and start the bonus. A spin can therefore pay lines, a collect and a scatter award all at once, though that combination is rare.

Reading the information pages

Before you play, open the in-game information screens. Check the RTP line, because platforms can run a different build from the published 96.53%. Look at the minimum and maximum bet in rupees, which depend on the platform. And read the jackpot page once, so you know exactly what each of the four prizes is worth at your stake.

What a typical session feels like

Medium volatility fits the experience. Most spins return little or nothing, line wins are modest unless five symbols connect, and the balance slowly drifts down between collects.
