What The Dog House is and why it still matters

Pragmatic Play released The Dog House in May 2019, and it became the base for one of the provider's longest-running series. The setup is deliberately plain: five reels, three rows and 20 fixed paylines that pay left to right. There are no cascades, no ways-to-win engine and no buy button. What makes it work is a single rule about the kennel wild and what happens to it once free spins start.

The official RTP is 96.51%, with a 95.51% build that some operators choose instead. Volatility is high, the maximum win is 6,750x your total stake, and bets run from 0.20 to 100 per spin. How a spin works step by step

1. Pick your total stake. With 20 fixed lines, every spin covers all of them, so a 1.00 stake means 0.05 per line.
2. The reels stop and the game checks each of the 20 paylines from the leftmost reel. A win needs matching symbols starting on reel 1 and running unbroken to the right.
3. If a kennel wild sits on a winning line, it stands in for the missing symbol and applies its 2x or 3x multiplier to that line win.
4. If two or three wilds share the same line, their multipliers are added, not multiplied. A 2x and a 3x give 5x; three 3x wilds give 9x.
5. Line wins are summed. If three scatter paws are visible, the free spins feature starts after the payout.

Because wilds can only appear on reels 2, 3 and 4, a single line can hold at most three of them. That caps the base-game line multiplier at 9x and explains the whole shape of the math: most of the big numbers need the free spins round, where those wilds stop disappearing.

Symbols and paytable

The symbol set has three tiers. Card royals from 10 to A are the low payers and appear most often. The bone and the collar sit in the middle. Four dogs are the premiums, and the rottweiler is the top one: five on a line pay 37.5x your total stake.

Exact values for every other symbol change with your stake and are shown in the in-game paytable, so open it once at the bet you plan to use. It shows the real cash amounts, which is easier to read than multiples.

The kennel wild and how multipliers add

Each wild that lands draws a random multiplier of 2x or 3x. On its own, one wild doubles or triples the line it completes. The interesting part is what happens when several wilds meet on one line, and this is where many reviews get it wrong: the values add.

• One 2x wild: the line pays 2x.
• A 2x and a 3x wild: 2 + 3 = 5x.
• Three 3x wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4: 3 + 3 + 3 = 9x.

A worked example at a 1.00 stake: a rottweiler on reel 1, three 3x wilds on reels 2 to 4 and a rottweiler on reel 5 make five rottweilers on that line. The base line pays 37.50, the combined wild multiplier is 9x, so that line returns 337.50. It is rare, but it shows the ceiling of a single base-game spin far better than any adjective.

A wild can also sit on more than one line at once. Each line that uses it gets the multiplier, so a single 3x kennel in the center of reel 3 can boost several small wins in the same spin.

Free spins with sticky wilds

The jewelled paw scatter appears only on reels 1, 3 and 5, so the feature needs one paw on each of those reels. Once all three are in view, a rottweiler spins a wooden machine that sets your number of free spins, anywhere from 9 to 27.

Two things change during the round:

• Stacked premiums. The four dog symbols can land stacked, which fills reels with the same high payer and makes full lines of dogs far more common than in the base game.
• Sticky wilds. Every kennel wild that lands locks in place with its multiplier and stays until the last free spin. New wilds join the ones already there.

The order matters. A wild that sticks on spin 2 works for every remaining spin, while one that arrives on the final spin works once. That is why the number of free spins from the machine is only half the picture: 9 spins with early wilds can beat 27 spins with late ones.

A worked free spins example

Stake 1.00. The machine awards 15 free spins. On spin 3, a 2x wild sticks on reel 2. On spin 6, a 3x wild sticks on reel 4. On spin 9, a 2x wild sticks on reel 3, in a row that shares a payline with the other two.

From spin 9 onward, any line running through those three positions carries 2 + 3 + 2 = 7x. If a stacked rottweiler lands on reels 1 and 5 on spin 12 and completes that line, five rottweilers pay 37.50 and the 7x lifts it to 262.50. Every other line that crosses one or two of those wilds gets its own added multiplier as well. With more wilds on the board, several lines can carry multipliers on the same spin, which is how rounds build toward the 6,750x cap.

The opposite case is just as instructive. If no wild sticks until spin 13 of 15, only three spins benefit, and the round often ends at a modest multiple of the stake. Both outcomes are normal for this game.

Is there a bonus buy or ante bet

No. The original Dog House has no feature purchase and no ante option. You reach free spins only by landing the three scatters in normal play. If you prefer to pay for the round directly, look at the later editions in the series, most of which add a buy option at 100x or more.

With no buy option, your bankroll has to carry you to the scatters. A practical rule is to size your stake so your session budget covers several hundred spins. At 0.20 per spin, 100 buys 500 spins; at 1.00, the same 100 lasts only 100 spins, which is often not enough to see a single bonus on a game like this. Decide on a loss limit before you start and stop when you reach it. Results are random, no pattern of bets changes the odds, and the 6,750x maximum is a cap, not a target.
