What Gates of Anubis is
Popiplay released Gates of Anubis on 27 March 2024. The setting is a moonlit Egyptian temple guarded by a bandaged mummy, with a golden scarab and temple treasures on the reels. Under the theme sits a 6 reel, 5 row grid that pays anywhere: eight or more of the same symbol on screen form a win, wherever they land.
If you know Gates of Olympus, the structure will feel familiar. Wins vanish and the reels refill, and in free spins multiplier symbols land, wait until the refills are over and then multiply the whole sequence. What Popiplay changes is the scale of the bonus. The number of scatters that trigger it decides whether you get 10, 20 or 30 free spins, and multipliers top out at x100.
The official RTP is 96.11%, volatility is high and the maximum win is 10,200x the bet.
How a spin works step by step
- Choose your total bet. Use the bet buttons or MAX. Available stakes depend on the casino.
- Thirty symbols land. Six reels of five rows.
- Symbols are counted. The game uses pay anywhere wins: 8 or more of a kind anywhere on the grid pay.
- Wins pay and disappear. Remaining symbols fall, and empty spots refill from above.
- Refills repeat. The process continues until no new win forms, with no limit on the number of refills.
- Wins are credited together. Everything from the sequence is added to your balance at the end.
Popiplay calls the cascade Refilling; elsewhere you will see it named tumble or avalanche. Our tumble guide explains the general idea. Scatters also pay on their own, and if a spin has both a scatter pay and symbol wins, you receive both.
Symbols and paytable
Nine regular symbols pay, plus the scatter. The values below come from the game server and are multiples of the total bet, grouped by count. The data does not name each symbol, so the table ranks them from highest to lowest; the in-game paytable shows the artwork beside each value.
| Symbol rank | 8 to 9 | 10 to 11 | 12 to 30 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (top) | 2x | 5x | 10x |
| 2 | 0.5x | 2x | 5x |
| 3 | 0.4x | 1x | 3x |
| 4 | 0.3x | 0.4x | 2.4x |
| 5 | 0.2x | 0.3x | 2x |
| 6 | 0.16x | 0.24x | 1.6x |
| 7 | 0.1x | 0.2x | 1x |
| 8 | 0.08x | 0.18x | 0.8x |
| 9 (lowest) | 0.05x | 0.15x | 0.4x |
Scatter pays are separate: 4 scatters pay 3x, 5 pay 5x and 6 pay 100x the bet, in addition to the free spins they award. The regular paytable is modest. Most base game hits return a fraction of the stake, and only the top two symbols reach 5x or more without help. That is normal for this format, where free spins multipliers carry the game.
Free spins
Four or more scatters anywhere start the free spins round. The count decides its length:
| Scatters | Free spins | Scatter pay |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 10 | 3x |
| 5 | 20 | 5x |
| 6 | 30 | 100x |
During the round, three or more scatters add 5 more spins. Six scatters are rare, but when they arrive the 100x scatter pay alone is a strong result before a single free spin has been played. A five scatter trigger doubles the length of the round compared with four, which matters because every extra spin is another chance for multipliers to meet a winning sequence.
Multiplier symbols explained with an example
The multiplier symbol lands only in free spins. Each one takes a random value from x2 to x100 and stays on the screen until the refilling sequence ends. Then all multiplier values on screen are added together, and the total win of that sequence is multiplied by the sum. Our multiplier guide compares this with other systems.
Worked example at a 1.00 bet:
- A free spin lands nine of the third ranked symbol: 0.40.
- The refill brings ten of the fifth ranked symbol: 0.30.
- A x5 and a x25 multiplier have landed during the sequence and stay put.
- The sequence ends. Raw wins total 0.70, multipliers add up to x30, and the spin pays 21.00.
Multipliers reset between free spins in this design; the rules describe them as staying only until the end of the refilling sequence. A multiplier that lands on a spin without any win pays nothing, which is the main source of disappointment in rounds that look busy but end small.
A full bonus round worked through
To see how the pieces fit, follow an illustrative round at a 1.00 bet triggered by five scatters. The trigger pays 5.00 straight away and awards 20 free spins.
- Spins 1 to 6 produce small wins between 0.10 and 0.60 with no multipliers, about 2.00 in total.
- Spin 7 lands a x10 multiplier but no win. It pays nothing and disappears after the spin.
- Spin 9 wins 1.20 across two refills while a x4 and a x15 sit on screen: 1.20 times 19 is 22.80.
- Spin 14 brings three scatters, so the round grows to 25 spins.
- Spins 15 to 25 add another 4.00 in small, unmultiplied wins.
The free spins return about 28.80, plus the 5.00 scatter pay, close to 34x the bet in total. The lesson is that one well timed multiplier spin carries most bonuses, while the rest of the round adds small change.
Buy Bonus and Chance X Booster
| Option | Cost | What it does | RTP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal play | 1x bet | Standard game | 96.11% |
| Chance X Booster | 1.25x bet | Higher chance to trigger free spins | 96.19% |
| Buy Bonus | 100x bet | Starts free spins at once | 96.52% |
The Chance X Booster is Popiplay's version of an ante bet: a 25% surcharge per spin for better bonus odds. It cannot be used at the same time as the buy. The bonus buy has the highest RTP of the three options at 96.52%, but remember that one bought round is a single, very swingy result. If you raise the bet, the buy price rises with it.
RTP, volatility and max win
The base RTP is 96.11%, and both paid options return slightly more. Casinos can offer other configurations, so check the Return to Player line in the rules screen. Our RTP guide explains why builds differ.
Volatility is high. The maximum win is 10,200x the bet, slightly above the 10,000x many similar games use. Expect most sessions to be decided by one or two free spins rounds rather than by base game hits.
Gates of Anubis versus similar slots
Compared with Gates of Olympus, the main differences you will notice are the scaled free spins award and the multiplier ceiling: here multipliers stop at x100, while the scatter count can triple the round length. Compared with Fury of Anubis, another Egyptian pay anywhere game, the approach is the opposite: that game doubles a running multiplier with each tumble, while Gates of Anubis relies on random multiplier symbols.
Bankroll and stake size
Because the base game paytable is light, your balance will usually drift down between bonuses. A practical rule is to divide your session budget by 300 to 500 spins and use that as your stake. With 100 units, that means 0.20 to 0.30 per spin. If you switch on the Chance X Booster, the 1.25x cost shortens the session by a fifth, so lower the base stake to compensate.
Set a stop point before you start, both for losses and for wins. A 10,200x cap is a ceiling, not an expectation.
How to test it in the free demo
- Play 200 spins at a fixed stake and note how often you see four scatters.
- In each bonus, track how many multipliers land on spins that actually win.
- Compare a session with the Chance X Booster against one without, at the same total spend.
- Open the rules and check the RTP line, the max win and the buy price at your stake.
Choose a stake that lets you play several hundred spins. High volatility means a long wait for the bonus is part of the game.
