Our verdict

Sweet Bonanza is still the cleanest version of the formula: no wilds, no stacked side features, just scatter pays, tumbles and bombs that only matter in free spins. The 21,100x ceiling is lower than in the newer editions, but the rules are easy to read and the base game makes sense from the first spin.

What we like
  • Any 8 matching symbols pay anywhere on the 6x5 grid, no paylines to track
  • Bombs from 2x to 100x are added together, so two or three of them stack fast
  • Double chance doubles the free-spin trigger rate for only 25% more per spin
  • Bonus buy at 100x gives direct access to the feature
Keep in mind
  • Bombs appear only in free spins, so the base game relies on tumbles alone
  • Max win of 21,100x is the lowest in the Sweet Bonanza series
  • Bonus buy is switched off while double chance is active

What Sweet Bonanza is and why it still matters

Sweet Bonanza came out in 2019 and set the template that Pragmatic Play has reused in a long line of scatter-pay slots. The screen is a 6x5 grid of fruit and candy, there are no paylines, and a win needs 8 or more copies of the same symbol anywhere on the grid. That single rule changes how you read every spin: position does not matter, only the count does.

The game has no wild symbol. Everything that lifts a result comes from two sources: tumbles, which let one spin produce several wins in a row, and multiplier bombs, which exist only inside the free spins round. If you understand those two parts, you understand the whole slot.

How a spin works step by step

  1. You set your stake. The standard range is 0.20 to 100 per spin, or 0.25 to 125 with double chance switched on.
  2. All 30 positions fill with symbols. The game counts each symbol type across the whole grid.
  3. Any symbol with 8 or more copies pays according to the paytable. Several symbol types can pay on the same spin.
  4. The winning symbols disappear. Symbols above them fall down, and new symbols drop in from the top.
  5. The grid is checked again. If a new group of 8+ appears, it pays and the tumble repeats.
  6. When no new win forms, the sequence ends and all its wins are added to your balance.

This is a scatter-pay system, not a cluster system: the 8 symbols do not have to touch each other. A banana in the top-left corner counts together with a banana in the bottom-right.

Symbols and paytable

There are nine regular symbols. The five fruits are the low tier, the four candies are the high tier, and the red heart sits at the top. Payouts are shown as multiples of your total stake for 8 to 9, 10 to 11, and 12 or more matching symbols.

Green candy2x5x15x
Blue candy1.5x2x12x
Apple1x1.5x10x
Plum0.8x1.2x8x
Watermelon0.5x1x5x
Grapes0.4x0.9x4x
Banana0.25x0.75x2x

Two things stand out. First, the jump from 10 to 11 symbols to 12 or more is steep for every fruit: apple goes from 1.5x to 10x, plum from 1.2x to 8x. A long tumble that keeps adding copies of one fruit can therefore be worth far more than a single mid-sized hit. Second, eight bananas return only a quarter of your stake, so many base-game wins pay less than the spin cost. That is normal for this format; the tumble and the bonus are where the value sits.

The lollipop scatter

The scatter is the lollipop. It pays on its own and does not need to form a group of 8.

  • 4 scatters pay 3x and award 10 free spins.
  • 5 scatters pay 5x and award 10 free spins.
  • 6 scatters pay 100x and award 10 free spins.

At a 1.00 stake, a six-lollipop trigger is worth 100.00 before a single free spin is played. Inside the round, 3 or more scatters add 5 more free spins, and this can repeat.

Free spins and multiplier bombs

The free spins round plays like the base game with one addition: multiplier bombs. Each bomb carries a value from 2x to 100x. Bombs do not pay on their own and do not vanish during tumbles. They stay on the grid until the tumble sequence is finished.

At the end of the sequence, the game adds up all bomb values that landed during it and applies that total to the whole sequence win. The key word is added, not multiplied: a 5x and a 10x make 15x, not 50x. And if the sequence produced no win at all, the bombs do nothing.

Worked example

You play at a 1.00 stake and the free spin opens with 8 bananas for 0.25. They tumble away, the refill brings 10 grapes for 0.90, and after that nothing else connects. The sequence win is 0.25 + 0.90 = 1.15.

During those tumbles three bombs landed: 5x, 10x and 2x. They add up to 17x, so the sequence pays 1.15 × 17 = 19.55. Now take the same bombs on a spin where no group of 8 forms: the payout is zero, because there is nothing to multiply.

Push it further. A sequence that collects 12 apples (10x) with a single 25x bomb returns 10.00 × 25 = 250.00 at the same stake. The size of a bonus depends on two things lining up at once: a real base win inside the sequence and a healthy bomb total.

Double chance and bonus buy

Sweet Bonanza offers two optional modes, and they cannot be combined.

Double chance. Your bet rises by 25%, so a 1.00 stake costs 1.25. In return, more scatters land and the chance to trigger free spins doubles. This works like an ante bet: you pay a steady surcharge for a higher trigger rate.

Bonus buy. You pay 100x your stake and go straight to the free spins. At 1.00 that is 100.00 per purchase. The bonus buy is disabled while double chance is on, so you pick one approach per session.

OptionCost at 1.00 stakeWhat it changes
Standard spin1.00Normal trigger rate
Double chance1.25Twice the chance of free spins, buy disabled
Bonus buy100.00Instant 10 free spins

A bought bonus can return far less than 100x. Treat each purchase as a single large bet with a wide range of outcomes, and size your session so that several below-cost results do not end it.

RTP, max win and the rules screen

The maximum win is 21,100x the stake. The return to player depends on the version the platform has chosen, and the exact value is shown in the game rules. Operators can run different RTP builds of the same slot, so check the number every time you open the game on a new site. Our RTP guide explains why a gap of a few tenths of a percent matters over thousands of spins.

In the rules screen, look for three lines: the theoretical RTP, the stake range (0.20 to 100 as standard), and whether bonus buy is available in your region. Some jurisdictions switch the buy off entirely.

Sweet Bonanza versus the newer editions

The original is the simplest member of the family. Later editions keep the grid, the tumble and the paytable structure but raise the multiplier ceiling and add new buys.

If you want to learn the mechanic without extra layers, start here. If you want bigger bomb values or more ways to spend on features, the newer editions are built for that.

How to test it in the demo

The free demo is the right place to learn the pacing before any money is involved. A useful routine:

  1. Play 100 base spins at a fixed stake and note how many of them return at least the stake.
  2. Count how many spins it takes to reach free spins. One trigger tells you little; three or four start to show a pattern.
  3. Watch the bomb totals in each bonus and how often they land on a spin with no win.
  4. Switch on double chance for another 100 spins and compare trigger counts against the 25% extra cost.
  5. Try a few demo bonus buys to see the spread of results against the 100x price.

Keep the sample in perspective: a few hundred demo spins show how the game feels, not what it will pay over the long run.

Bankroll notes

Most of the value in Sweet Bonanza is concentrated in the free spins, and those arrive at irregular intervals. Pick a stake that gives you enough spins to reach several bonuses, not just one. As a simple rule, if a single bonus buy would take more than a fifth of your session budget, the stake is too high for buying. Set a loss limit before you start and stop when you reach it, whatever the last bonus looked like.

Frequently asked questions

How do you win in Sweet Bonanza?

Land 8 or more identical symbols anywhere on the 6x5 grid. There are no paylines, so position does not matter. Winning symbols disappear, new ones fall in, and the tumble continues while fresh wins keep forming. Several symbol types can pay on the same spin.

How many scatters trigger free spins in Sweet Bonanza?

Four or more lollipop scatters trigger 10 free spins. Four pay 3x, five pay 5x and six pay 100x the stake on top of the trigger. During the bonus, 3 or more scatters add 5 more free spins.

How do the multiplier bombs work?

Bombs worth 2x to 100x land only during free spins. They stay on the grid until the tumble sequence ends, then all their values are added together and the total multiplies that sequence's win. If the sequence has no win, the bombs pay nothing.

What is the maximum win in Sweet Bonanza?

The maximum win is 21,100x the stake. That is the lowest ceiling in the series: Sweet Bonanza 1000 and 2500 go to 25,000x and Sweet Bonanza Super Scatter to 50,000x.

What is the RTP of Sweet Bonanza?

The RTP depends on the version the platform has set, and different operators may run different builds. Open the game rules before playing: the exact theoretical return for that build is listed there.

How much does the Sweet Bonanza bonus buy cost?

Buying free spins costs 100x the stake, so 100.00 at a 1.00 bet. The buy is unavailable while double chance is active, and some regions disable it altogether.

What does double chance do in Sweet Bonanza?

Double chance raises the bet by 25%, so a 1.00 stake costs 1.25. More scatters land and the chance of triggering free spins doubles. Bonus buy is switched off while it is active, and the bet range becomes 0.25 to 125.
