The slot that started the Big Bass series
Big Bass Bonanza came out in 2020, and its lakeside setting will feel familiar to anyone who has spent a summer weekend at a cottage dock. Under the theme sits a deliberately simple machine: five reels, three rows, ten lines, a fisherman wild and fish that carry cash values in the bonus. No cascades, no grid that grows, no cluster rules. Every later edition, such as Big Bass Splash or the higher-stakes Big Bass Bonanza 1000, keeps this collection idea at its core, so the original is the best place to learn it.
The published return is 96.71%. That figure is an average across millions of spins and says nothing certain about one evening. Our RTP guide explains why two players on the same game can end a session in completely different places. Every example below uses Canadian dollars.

How a spin plays out
- Choose the stake. It always covers all 10 lines; there is no line selector. The casino sets the minimum and maximum, and you will find them in the game rules.
- Reels stop. Fifteen symbols settle across the 5x3 window.
- Line check. Three or more of a symbol on one of the 10 fixed paylines pay, starting on reel 1 and running left to right with no gaps. The fishing rod is the only symbol that already pays for two.
- Wild substitution. The fisherman stands in for regular symbols to finish a line.
- Scatter count. Scatters work anywhere on screen. Three, four or five of them open the free spins.
All line wins on a spin are added together. Ten lines leave many spins empty, which is ordinary for a slot built this way.
Paytable converted to CA$
The symbols split into four fishing items plus a fish, and five card ranks. Payouts are multiples of the total stake. We list them for five, four and three on a line, with the five-symbol amount at a CA$2 stake in the last column.
| Symbol | Five | Four | Three | Five at CA$2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rod | 200x | 20x | 5x | CA$400 |
| Reel | 100x | 15x | 3x | CA$200 |
| Tackle box | 50x | 10x | 2x | CA$100 |
| Float | 50x | 10x | 2x | CA$100 |
| Fish | 20x | 5x | 1x | CA$40 |
| Each card rank (A to 10) | 10x | 2.5x | 0.5x | CA$20 |
Two rods on a line pay 0.5x, so CA$1 at a CA$2 stake, and that is the only two-symbol win in the game. Compare the top and bottom of the table: five rods are worth CA$400, five aces CA$20. With a gap that wide, most base-game wins are small, and an occasional rod or reel line is what lifts a session.

How scatters set the bonus length
Your opening allowance of free spins depends on the scatter count:
| Scatters | Free spins awarded |
|---|---|
| 3 | 10 |
| 4 | 15 |
| 5 | 20 |
The round keeps the same grid and the same ten lines, but two things change. Money fish begin to land, and the fisherman wild can now collect them.
Money fish and the fisherman's haul
Money fish exist only in free spins. Each displays a cash value, and the top value reaches 2,000 times the stake, which would be CA$4,000 at CA$2. A fish alone does nothing; without a fisherman landing alongside it, its value is never paid.
When a fisherman lands, he collects the value of every fish visible on the reels. Two fishermen on one spin each collect, so every fish is counted twice. That leads to three typical outcomes: a screen full of fish without a wild pays only its line wins; a single fish with a single fisherman pays that fish; several big fish with two wilds can produce the round's best moment.
The retrigger ladder: 2x, 3x and 10x
The game keeps count of every fisherman during the round. Each fourth one adds 10 free spins and lifts the multiplier on later collections:
| Fishermen counted | Spins added | Collection multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 3 | 0 | 1x |
| 4th | 10 | 2x |
| 8th | 10 | 3x |
| 12th | 10 | 10x |
The final step is the steep one. Going from 3x to 10x more than triples every later collection, which is why a bonus that reaches the twelfth wild can look nothing like one stuck on seven.
Worked example: one CA$2 bonus
Four scatters land on a CA$2 spin, so the round opens with 15 free spins.
- Spin 2: fish worth 2x and 5x appear with one fisherman. He collects 7x, which is CA$14.
- Spins 3 to 9: three more fishermen arrive and gather small fish worth CA$10 between them. The wild count hits four: 10 extra spins arrive and the multiplier steps up to 2x.
- Spin 14: a 10x fish and a 20x fish land with one fisherman. The raw haul is 30x, doubled to 60x, which pays CA$120.
- Spin 23: after the eighth wild has raised the level to 3x and added another 10 spins, two fishermen land beside a single 5x fish. Each collects it, so the raw total is 10x, tripled to 30x, or CA$60.
Collections in this round come to CA$14 + CA$10 + CA$120 + CA$60 = CA$204, a little over 100 times the stake, with line wins on top. Had spin 23 come after the twelfth wild instead, the same fish would have paid 100x, or CA$200, on its own.
The opposite round is just as normal: ten spins, two fishermen, and neither lands while a fish is on screen. That bonus returns only its line wins, maybe a few dollars. The distance between those two outcomes is the main reason to judge this game over several bonuses and to keep the stake small enough that a flat one does not end your session.
Buying the bonus
Where the casino has enabled it, the bonus buy skips straight to free spins for 100 times the stake: CA$50 at CA$0.50, or CA$200 at CA$2. It removes the wait for scatters, not the risk. A bought round with few wilds can pay back a small part of its price. If no buy button is visible, the operator has turned the option off and the game plays as normal.
Big Bass Bonanza in Canada
Canadian gambling is regulated at the provincial level. Ontario and Alberta each operate their own regulated online market, and this edition of the site is not intended for players in those provinces. The legal age is 19 in most of the country and 18 in Alberta, Quebec and Manitoba. Stick to the rules where you live, and never use a VPN or similar service to bypass a block.
To compare casinos that take Canadian dollars, start with our Canada casino rankings. If you plan to deposit by bank transfer, the Interac guide walks through limits and payout times. Before depositing, confirm Big Bass Bonanza is in the lobby and that its rules show 96.71%.
Testing it in the free demo
The demo on this page uses the real game maths with play credits, which makes it the right place to learn the pace first.
- Open the rules and look for 96.71% on the RTP line. Anything lower means the platform runs another configuration.
- Write down the stake limits shown there, since they differ between casinos.
- Play a few hundred spins at a single stake and count how often scatters bring the bonus. It tells you how long a real budget has to last.
- Use play credits to buy two or three bonuses and compare rounds that stall at 1x with rounds that reach 2x or 3x.
Size your real stake so the budget survives a long wait for scatters. With CA$100, a stake around CA$0.20 to CA$0.40 leaves room for several hundred spins.
Who should play it
This game is for players who want a single mechanic they can read instantly: cash on the fish, a fisherman to collect it, and a multiplier that climbs every four wilds. If you want a busier bonus with random modifiers before the round, the Splash edition layers them onto this same foundation. Big Bass Bonanza 1000 aims higher, with a stated 20,000x maximum win and a second, pricier buy. For understanding how the whole family works, the original remains the clearest starting point.

Where to play Big Bass Bonanza in Canadian dollars
Questions from Canadian players
Which RTP should Canadians expect from Big Bass Bonanza?
The published figure is 96.71%. It is a long-run average, so a single session can land far from it, up or down. Open the game rules at your casino to make sure that build is the one running before you deposit any Canadian dollars.
How many free spins does Big Bass Bonanza award?
Three scatters give 10 free spins, four give 15 and five give 20. During the bonus each fourth fisherman wild adds 10 more spins, which can happen up to three times.
How do the money fish pay?
Money fish land only in free spins and show cash values up to 2,000 times the stake, or CA$4,000 at CA$2. They pay only when a fisherman lands on the same spin and collects every fish on screen.
What do the 2x, 3x and 10x multipliers mean?
They apply to fisherman collections. The fourth wild of the round sets 2x, the eighth sets 3x and the twelfth sets 10x, and each of those steps also adds 10 free spins.
Which symbol pays the most on a line?
The fishing rod. Five on a line return 200 times the stake, so CA$400 at CA$2. It also pays 0.5x for two in a row, the only symbol in the game that pays for a pair.
How much is the Big Bass Bonanza bonus buy?
Where enabled, it costs 100 times the stake: CA$50 at CA$0.50 or CA$200 at CA$2. Some casinos switch the buy off, and in that case the button simply does not appear.
Can I play Big Bass Bonanza in every province?
Gambling rules are set by each province. Ontario and Alberta run their own regulated markets and are not covered by this edition. You must be 19, or 18 in Alberta, Quebec and Manitoba. Never use tools to bypass blocks.
