What Pearl Lagoon is
Play'n GO released Pearl Lagoon on 5 October 2012. The setting is a coral reef with light falling through the water: a seahorse, a clownfish, a turtle and a shoal of angelfish appear among the premium symbols, a dolphin is the wild and a giant clam is the scatter. The card ranks 10 to A in bright colors make up the lower symbols.
The game is a five-reel, three-row video slot with up to 20 paylines and up to five coins per line. It belongs to the earlier generation of Play'n GO releases, before the expanding symbol and wheel bonuses that came later, and its mechanics fit in one paragraph. That simplicity is the point: one wild rule, one scatter rule, one free spins rule.
Play'n GO's rules sheet rates it high volatility, 7 on the provider's scale. It does not state a single maximum win figure, so the top result for your bet is best checked in the in-game paytable.
How a spin works, step by step
- Open the settings and choose lines (1 to 20), coins per line (1 to 5) and coin value (0.01 to 1.00). The total bet is lines times coins times coin value, from 0.01 to 100.
- Press spin. Five reels stop on a 5x3 window.
- Each active line is read from the leftmost reel. Wins need matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from reel one.
- The dolphin substitutes for every symbol except the clam. Any line win that includes a dolphin is paid at double value.
- Only the highest win on each line is paid, and wins on several lines are added up.
- Two or more clams anywhere pay a scatter win. Three or more also start free spins.
- After a win you can collect or try the optional gamble round.
Lines are switched on in numerical order. Fewer lines lower the cost of a spin but also cut the number of combinations that can pay, so most players keep all 20 on and adjust the coin value instead.
Symbols and paytable
The rules sheet lists wins as multiples of the bet per line. At one coin per line and a 0.10 coin value, your line bet is 0.10 and a value of 250 means 25.00. The provider does not publish which sea creature sits in which premium tier, so the table uses tier labels.
| Symbol | 5 of a kind | 4 of a kind | 3 of a kind | 2 of a kind |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dolphin (wild) | 5,000 | 1,000 | 100 | 10 |
| Premium 5 | 750 | 250 | 25 | 3 |
| Premium 4 | 750 | 250 | 25 | 2 |
| Premium 3 | 500 | 150 | 20 | none |
| Premium 2 and 1 | 250 | 75 | 15 | none |
| Card ranks, top two | 150 | 50 | 10 | none |
| Card rank, middle | 125 | 25 | 5 | none |
| Card ranks, lower two | 100 | 20 | 5 | none |
The scatter pays on its own scale, as a multiple of the total bet: 2x for two clams, 5x for three, 20x for four and 200x for five, wherever they land. Note also that the two best premiums and the wild pay from just two on a line, which gives the base game a steady trickle of small wins.
The dolphin wild and the double win rule
The dolphin is more than a stand-in. Whenever it helps form a winning line, that line pays twice the listed value. This is a built-in multiplier that applies in the base game, not just in the bonus. Since the dolphin can stand in for any regular symbol, it often turns a two-symbol start into a three or four of a kind and doubles the result at the same time.
The one thing the dolphin cannot do is replace a clam. Scatter wins and the free spins trigger always need real clams.
Free spins: triple prizes, x6 with a wild
Three or more clams anywhere on the reels start the free spins, played at the same lines and bet as the triggering spin. Two rules change during the round:
- All winning combinations pay three times their normal value.
- Combinations that include a dolphin pay six times their normal value, the x2 wild rule and the x3 bonus rule working together.
Landing three or more clams again during the round awards more spins, up to a total of 60 free spins. The rules sheet does not say how many spins each trigger gives, so check the paytable screen of the game for that number before you judge the bonus.
Worked examples at a 2.00 stake
Take 20 lines, one coin per line and a 0.10 coin value. The total bet is 2.00 and the line bet is 0.10.
- Base game, four of Premium 5 on one line: 250 x 0.10 = 25.00. If one of the four is a dolphin, the line pays double: 50.00.
- Free spins, the same four of a kind with no wild: 25.00 x 3 = 75.00, or 37.5 times the stake.
- Free spins with a dolphin in the line: 25.00 x 6 = 150.00, or 75 times the stake from one line.
- Scatter only, three clams in the base game: 5 x 2.00 = 10.00 plus the start of the bonus.
- Five dolphins on one line are listed at 5,000 times the line bet, 500.00 at this stake, before any free spins boost.
The examples show where the value sits. Dolphin-assisted lines in the free spins are the big results, and any extra clams that keep the round going give the x6 rule more chances to land.
Gamble feature
After a base game win you can gamble it on a face-down card. Guess the color correctly to double the win, a 1 in 2 chance, or the suit to quadruple it, a 1 in 4 chance. You can play up to five rounds in a row, up to a limit of 2,500 coins. The rules state the gamble does not change the overall RTP, and it is off during autoplay. It is a coin flip on money you have already won, so use it sparingly.
Choosing lines, coins and coin value
Three settings reach the same total bet in different ways. A 1.00 spin can be 20 lines at one coin of 0.05, or 20 lines at five coins of 0.01, or ten lines at one coin of 0.10. The first two are identical in value, since line wins scale with the bet per line. The third halves the number of lines that can pay and doubles the value of each one, which makes results lumpier without changing the paytable. Keeping all 20 lines active and moving the coin value or coin count is the cleaner way to adjust your stake.
RTP and volatility
The default RTP is 96.88%, and the live help shows the same figure in regulated markets. Operators can also choose 94.83%, 91.84%, 87.85% or 84.85%, which means the version at your casino may return noticeably less. For a game this simple, the RTP build is the single most important setting to check.
On volatility, the high rating comes from the free spins: the x3 and x6 rules make the bonus worth far more than the base game, and the bonus needs three clams on a three-row screen. If you prefer a modern take on the same idea of one strong bonus rule, Rise of Merlin uses expanding symbols on ten lines and rates even higher on the provider's scale.
Testing it in the demo and reading the rules
The free demo on this page is Play'n GO's own practice build. Use it to answer the one question the rules sheet leaves open: how many free spins a trigger gives. Then play a few hundred spins and count how often the dolphin appears in a winning line, since that is where the double and x6 values come from.
At a real money casino, open the help screen and check the RTP line, the coin values and the line options the operator allows. Pick a stake that covers at least 200 spins of your budget. Play only with money you can afford to lose, and only where online casino play is legal for adults.
