What Barrel Bonanza is
Backseat Gaming released Barrel Bonanza on 12 March 2024. The studio sets it in a tropical world of ancient ruins and lush jungle, and the star is a giant ape, Kong, with a weakness for barrels. Torches, palm trees and a ruined stone temple frame the reels, and wooden barrels are everywhere.
The studio's original game page lists the key facts: a 5x4 grid, Sticky Barrels and the Kong feature, a maximum win of 10,000 times the bet, a 27% hit frequency, medium volatility and two RTP figures, 94.32% and 93.23%. Backseat Gaming has since relaunched as an independent studio with a new website that no longer lists the game, so the figures here come from that original page.
What the page leaves out is the pay system, the bet range, the paytable and the exact rules of each feature. All of these appear in the game's help screen, and the official demo lets you read them for free.
How a spin works
- Set the stake. The available range depends on the casino.
- Spin. The reels stop on a 5x4 window, 20 positions in total.
- Wins are paid according to the pay system described in the paytable.
- Kong feature. When it activates, Kong throws wild barrels onto the grid.
- Sticky Barrels. Barrels marked as sticky stay in place, as set out in the rules.
The Kong feature and wild barrels
The studio describes the Kong feature in one line: when it activates, Kong throws wild barrels onto the grid. A wild substitutes for regular symbols, so every barrel that lands gives nearby symbols a way to connect. On a 5x4 grid each barrel covers one of 20 positions, and a few of them in the middle reels can link symbols across several rows at once.
The rules screen tells you what activates Kong, how many barrels he can throw and whether he appears in the base game, a bonus round or both. Those details shape how often you will see him, so read them before you start.
Position matters too. A wild on reel 1 can only start wins, while a wild on reels 2, 3 or 4 can sit inside a winning run and connect symbols on both sides of it. So when Kong throws barrels, the ones that land on the middle reels usually do the most work, especially if they stay sticky for the following spins.
Sticky Barrels explained
Sticky means a symbol stays where it landed for more than one spin. Sticky wilds are a well known tool for building value over a sequence: each one that stays makes the following spins more likely to connect, and the effect grows as more are added. The studio pairs Sticky Barrels with the Kong feature as the game's two main mechanics, and together they promise a grid that fills with wilds over time.
The key questions to answer in the help screen are how long a sticky barrel stays (for a fixed number of spins, until a feature ends, or until it takes part in a win) and whether barrels carry any extra value such as a multiplier. For comparison, The Dog House combines sticky wilds with wild multipliers in its free spins.
Worked example: how sticky wilds build a sequence
This example uses illustrative values, since the paytable is only in the game, and it assumes the barrels Kong throws stay sticky for the next spins. Check that in your version's rules. Say you play 1.00.
- Spin 1. Kong throws two wild barrels onto reel 3. A symbol on reels 1 and 2 meets a barrel and completes a three-symbol win worth 0.40.
- Spin 2. Both barrels stay. Now any matching pair on reels 1 and 2 in their rows completes a win, and another barrel lands on reel 4. A four-symbol win pays 1.20.
- Spin 3. Three barrels are now held. Wins along those rows need only one or two matching symbols to reach four or five in a row, and the spin pays 3.00.
Over three spins that is 4.60 on 3.00 staked. The exact amounts will differ, but the mechanism is the point: every barrel that stays raises the value of the next spin, which is how a medium volatility game can still reach a 10,000x cap.
RTP, volatility and hit frequency
The studio's page prints two RTP figures, 94.32% and 93.23%. Both are well below the 96% many players use as a benchmark. Over 1,000 spins at 1.00, the expected cost is about 56.80 on the higher version and 67.70 on the lower one. Check the help screen of your casino's version, and treat this as an entertainment game rather than a value pick.
Medium volatility and a 27% hit rate, one win every 3.7 spins on average, make the base game livelier than many high volatility titles. If each spin is independent, the chance of a run of losing spins starting at any given spin is about 20.7% for five, 4.3% for ten and 0.9% for fifteen. Dry spells still happen, but they tend to be shorter than in a game like Shadow Strike.
Confirmed facts and what to read in the game
| Confirmed by the studio | Shown only in the game |
|---|---|
| 5x4 grid | Pay system and number of lines or ways |
| Kong throws wild barrels | What triggers Kong and how many barrels he throws |
| Sticky Barrels | How long barrels stay and any multipliers |
| Max win 10,000x | Bet range in your casino |
| Hit frequency 27%, medium volatility | Free spins or bonus buy, if offered |
| RTP figures 94.32% and 93.23% | Which RTP version is active |
We keep these two columns separate on purpose. Many listings fill the right-hand column with guesses; we would rather send you to the source, which in this case is the help screen of the official game.
Barrel Bonanza compared with Shadow Strike
| Barrel Bonanza | Shadow Strike | |
|---|---|---|
| Release | March 2024 | June 2024 |
| Grid | 5x4 | 5x4, up to 5x6 |
| RTP versions | 94.32% / 93.23% | 96.36% / 94.31% |
| Volatility | Medium | High (4 of 5) |
| Hit frequency | 27% | 24.37% |
| Max win | 10,000x | 15,000x |
Both come from Backseat Gaming in the same year. Shadow Strike offers more upside and a better top RTP; Barrel Bonanza offers more frequent wins and a calmer ride.
How to test it in the demo
The official play-money demo runs in the browser (see our demo guide). In a few hundred spins you can answer the questions the studio's page leaves open:
- the pay system and paytable values at your stake;
- what triggers the Kong feature and how many barrels he throws;
- how long Sticky Barrels stay and whether they carry multipliers;
- whether there is a free spins round or a bonus buy in your version;
- the RTP version and bet limits in the help screen.
Bankroll and stake sizing
Medium volatility allows a slightly shorter plan than high volatility games: a budget for 200 to 300 spins at your stake is reasonable. With 60.00, a 0.20 stake gives 300 spins, while 0.50 gives 120. Because both RTP versions are low, the house edge works harder here than in most modern slots, so a firm loss limit matters. At 0.20 per spin the 10,000x cap equals 2,000.00, which shows that even a small stake keeps a large prize in play.
A practical way to track a session is to count Kong features rather than single wins. Note how many spins pass between them and what each one returns as a multiple of your stake. If, after a fair sample, the features mostly return less than the spins they cost, lower the stake or stop; if one lands big, consider banking part of it. Either way, decide those rules before the first spin, when your judgment is not yet tied to the last result.
