What Shadow Strike is
Backseat Gaming released Shadow Strike on 18 June 2024. The studio describes it as a trip into the mysterious, action-packed world of ninjas, and the art backs that up: a moonlit Japanese castle, lanterns and blossom trees, with a katana slicing through the logo.
The studio's own game page lists the essentials: a 5x4 grid that expands to 5x6 with Feature Reels, three unique bonus rounds, two RTP versions of 96.36% and 94.31%, a maximum win of 15,000 times the bet, a hit frequency of 24.37% and high volatility, rated 4 on a 5-point scale.
Backseat Gaming has since relaunched as an independent studio with a new website, and Shadow Strike is no longer listed there. The figures on this page come from the studio's original game page.
Here is what those published numbers mean in practice:
| Item | Value | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Grid | 5x4, up to 5x6 | 20 positions in the base layout, 30 when fully expanded |
| RTP | 96.36% or 94.31% | Check which version your casino runs |
| Hit frequency | 24.37% | About one winning spin in four |
| Volatility | High (4 of 5) | Long quiet stretches, rare large wins |
| Max win | 15,000x | 15,000.00 at a 1.00 stake |
The studio does not publish the pay system, the bet range or the paytable on its page. The game's help screen lists all three, and we explain below what to look for. Treat this page as a map of what is confirmed and what you still need to read in the game itself.
How a spin works
- Set the stake. The available range is set by the casino and shown in the game settings.
- Spin. The reels stop on a 5x4 window.
- Wins are paid according to the game's pay system, which the paytable describes.
- Feature Reels. When they come into play, the grid grows to 5x6, adding two rows.
- Bonus check. The game checks for the triggers of its three bonus rounds.
Feature Reels and the 5x6 grid
The headline mechanic is growth. A 5x4 grid has 20 symbol positions; a 5x6 grid has 30, half as many again. More positions mean more room for winning combinations and for special symbols, which is why expanding grids are a common route to large maximum wins.
The studio's page connects the expansion to the Feature Reels, but it does not spell out when they appear or how long the larger grid stays. Those rules are in the help screen. When you open the demo, watch for three things: what triggers the Feature Reels, whether the extra rows stay for one spin or for a whole feature, and whether paying combinations change when the grid is taller.
Three bonus rounds
Shadow Strike offers three bonus rounds, which the studio calls a multi-layered experience. It does not describe them in detail on its page, so we will not guess at their contents. What the number three tells you is useful anyway: the game spreads its value across several features instead of one, so different sessions can feel very different depending on which round you reach.
Before playing for money, read the rules screen for each round: how it is triggered, how many spins or steps it lasts, what special symbols or multipliers it uses and whether it can be bought. If a bonus buy menu appears in your version, compare the price of each round with what you have seen it pay in the demo.
Worked example: reading the hit rate and the cap
A 24.37% hit frequency means about 24 winning spins in every 100, or one win every 4.1 spins on average. On a high volatility game, many of those wins will be smaller than the stake. Here is what that looks like at a 0.50 stake over 400 spins, a total of 200.00 wagered:
- You can expect around 97 winning spins and about 303 losing ones.
- At the 96.36% RTP the long-run average return on 200.00 is about 192.72; at 94.31% it is about 188.62.
- The maximum single win at 0.50 is 15,000 x 0.50 = 7,500.00.
The gap between the average and the cap is the point of a high volatility design: most sessions end near or below the average, and a small number end far above it.
What the base game feels like
A hit rate is easier to judge when you turn it into streaks. If roughly 24.37% of spins win and each spin is independent, the chance of a run of losing spins looks like this:
| Losing spins in a row | Chance of such a run starting at any given spin |
|---|---|
| 5 | about 24.7% |
| 10 | about 6.1% |
| 15 | about 1.5% |
| 20 | about 0.4% |
Over a session of a few hundred spins, a run of ten or more dead spins is close to certain, and a run of twenty is quite possible. That is normal behavior, not a sign that the game has changed. It is also why a budget measured in spins, not in money, is the better way to plan: decide how many spins you want to see, then divide your budget by that number to get your stake.
Remember too that a win is not the same as a profit. On a high volatility slot many base game wins can return less than the stake, so your balance can drift down even while the screen shows regular wins.
RTP versions and volatility
The studio lists two RTP settings, 96.36% and 94.31%. A casino chooses one, and the help screen shows which. Over 1,000 spins at 1.00 the expected cost is about 36.40 on the first and 56.90 on the second, so the version matters more than most players assume.
The volatility rating of 4 out of 5 places Shadow Strike firmly in the high range. Expect long stretches where only small wins appear, with most of the value concentrated in the bonus rounds.
Planning a session, with numbers
Here is the spins-first method applied to Shadow Strike. Suppose you bring 100.00 and want to see 400 spins, enough for several bonus round chances on a high volatility game.
- Stake. 100.00 divided by 400 spins gives 0.25 per spin.
- Expected cost. At 96.36% RTP, 400 spins at 0.25 (100.00 wagered) carry an average cost of about 3.64; at 94.31% it is about 5.69. Real sessions land far above or below that.
- Ceiling. At 0.25 the 15,000x cap equals 3,750.00.
- Stop rules. Pick a loss limit, for example half the budget, and a win target at which you cash out.
If 0.25 is below your casino's minimum, either reduce the number of planned spins or bring a larger budget. Raising the stake while keeping the same budget simply means fewer chances to reach the features that hold most of the value.
Shadow Strike compared with similar slots
Its stablemate Barrel Bonanza, also from Backseat Gaming in 2024, uses a 5x4 grid too, but caps at 10,000x and is rated medium volatility with a 27% hit rate. Shadow Strike takes more risk for a higher ceiling. Among bigger names, Gates of Olympus 1000 shares the 15,000x cap with a very different tumble and multiplier design on a 6x5 grid.
How to test it in the demo
The official demo runs in the browser with play money (see our demo guide). Spend a few hundred spins there and note:
- the pay system and the paytable values at your stake;
- what triggers the Feature Reels and how long the 5x6 grid lasts;
- the trigger and rules of each of the three bonus rounds;
- the RTP version and bet limits shown in the help screen.
For real money, size your stake so your budget covers at least 300 to 400 spins. High volatility needs room to breathe, and a stop point set in advance protects you from chasing a bonus round that has not arrived.
