What Starlight Princess is

Pragmatic Play released Starlight Princess on 23 September 2021 and described it as the studio's first anime inspired video slot. You travel up into the clouds to a hidden castle, where the Princess floats beside the reels and throws winged multiplier symbols into play. Under the artwork sits a familiar engine: a 6 reel, 5 row grid, a pay anywhere win system, tumbling wins and multipliers that stack by addition. Pragmatic itself calls the experience highly volatile, and the numbers back that up.

If you already know Gates of Olympus, the frame will feel close. Both games use a 6x5 grid, pay for 8 or more symbols anywhere, list RTP at 96.50%, cap wins at 5,000x and sell the bonus for 100x. The differences are in theme, symbol art and how each round feels on screen, so the choice between them is mostly about which world you prefer to spend a long session in.

How a spin works step by step

1. Set the stake. The base game costs 20 coins per spin, so your total bet is twenty times the coin value. With Ante Bet active it becomes 25 coins.
2. Thirty symbols land. The grid fills six columns of five.
3. Symbols are counted. The game uses scatter pays: 8 or more copies of one symbol anywhere on the grid form a win. Position and adjacency do not matter.
4. Winners disappear. Paid symbols are removed, the rest fall down and new ones drop in. This tumble repeats as long as fresh wins appear.
5. Multipliers are collected. Any winged multiplier symbol that lands during the chain stays on the grid until the tumbling stops.
6. The sequence is paid. All wins from the chain are summed, then every multiplier value on screen is added together and applied to that total.

A multiplier on a spin that produced no win multiplies nothing. The big base game moments therefore need two things at once: a tumble chain that pays, and at least one winged symbol landing during it.

Symbols and paytable

There are nine regular paying symbols and one scatter, the Starlight Princess herself. Payouts depend only on how many copies of a symbol are on the grid, grouped into three bands. The values below are multiples of your total base bet, ranked from the highest paying symbol to the lowest; the in-game paytable shows the artwork next to each row.

Look at the jump into the top band. The fourth ranked symbol pays 2x at ten or eleven copies but 12x at twelve, so a single extra symbol in a tumble can multiply the value of a hit six times. The bottom symbols, by contrast, rarely return more than your stake on their own, which is why so much of the game's value hangs on multipliers.

The scatter pays too. Four scatters return 3x, five return 5x and six or more return 100x, and any four or more also start the free spins.

Multiplier symbols explained

The winged multipliers come in green, blue, pink and orange and can land on any spin, in the base game or in the bonus. Each one takes a random value from x2 up to x500. Our multipliers guide compares the main types; here is exactly how this one behaves.

• Multipliers wait on the grid until the whole tumble sequence ends.
• At that point all of their values are added, not multiplied. A x10 and a x5 make x15, not x50.
• The combined value applies to the total win of the sequence, not to a single symbol group.
• In the base game nothing carries over: the next paid spin starts from zero.

Worked example at a 1.00 total bet: the first drop lands twelve of the third ranked symbol for 15.00. The tumble then adds eight of the seventh ranked symbol for 0.50, and a x10 and a x5 multiplier appear during the chain. The sequence totals 15.50, the multipliers add to x15, and the spin pays 232.50.

Free spins and the running multiplier

Four or more scatters anywhere on the grid award 15 free spins. This is where Starlight Princess earns its reputation, because multipliers stop resetting. Every multiplier symbol that hits during a winning tumble is added to a total multiplier for the round, and the updated total is applied to that win. The total never goes down until the feature ends.

Worked example at a 1.00 bet:

1. On spin 2 a tumble chain pays 4.00 and a x20 lands. The running total becomes x20, so the chain pays 80.00.
2. On spin 7 a chain pays 2.50 with a x5 and a x3. The total rises to x28 and the chain pays 70.00.
3. On spin 12 a chain pays 6.00 with a x50. The total jumps to x78, and that chain alone pays 468.00.

The same 12.50 of raw wins would have paid only 12.50 without multipliers, or 400.00 if each multiplier had applied on its own spin as in the base game. The running total is what turns a middling round into a big one, and it also explains why early multipliers are worth more than late ones: they get more spins to work with.

Ante Bet and bonus buy

Starlight Princess offers two ways to change the shape of a session. The Ante Bet raises your stake by 25%, from 20 to 25 coins, and in return doubles your chance of triggering free spins. At a 1.00 base bet you pay 1.25 per spin while it is switched on.

The bonus buy costs 100x your bet and sends you straight into the 15 free spins, where permitted by the operator's jurisdiction. The game server lists 96.50% for the regular mode, the ante mode and the purchased feature, so none of these options carries an RTP penalty in the build we checked. What they change is variance: a bought round can return far more or far less than the 100x you paid, and a handful of buys can drain a bankroll quickly.

One detail worth knowing: the maximum win is 5,000x the base bet. With Ante Bet active the rules express the cap as 4,000x of the raised stake, which is the same amount in cash.

RTP, volatility and max win

The Starlight Princess series

The original has two direct follow ups. Starlight Princess 1000, released on 26 October 2023, keeps the 6x5 layout, the tumbles and the scatter triggered bonus, but raises the multiplier range to x2 up to x1,000. Starlight Princess Super Scatter arrived on 30 October 2025 and adds Super Scatter symbols: triggering the bonus with one, two, three or four of them pays an instant 100x, 500x, 5,000x or 50,000x, the series' highest cap. Multipliers there still run up to x500 and the bonus still starts from four scatters with 15 free spins.

The original remains the leanest version. It lacks the higher ceilings, but it is the easiest way to learn how the running multiplier behaves before you move to the more extreme editions.

How to test it in the free demo
