Sugar, fruit and a grid that counts
Sweet Bonanza dates from 2019, and the Pragmatic Play layout it introduced has since been reused across a whole catalogue of scatter pays games. Thirty squares of fruit and sweets sit on six reels and five rows. Lines do not exist here. All that matters is how many copies of one symbol are on screen: eight or more and you are paid, wherever they are.
No wild symbol appears in this game. Every boost to a result comes from either tumbles, which let one paid spin keep producing new wins, or multiplier bombs, which only show up inside free spins. Learn those two pieces and you have learnt the slot. The examples below use rand stakes of R5 and R10, the kind of amounts a casual player in South Africa might set aside for an evening.
One spin, start to finish
- Pick a stake. Per the rules, normal play runs from 0.20 up to 100, and switching on double chance moves the band to 0.25 through 125; the bet menu shows the exact rand steps your account allows.
- The thirty squares fill, and every symbol type is counted over the whole screen.
- Each type with eight or more copies pays per the paytable, and more than one type can pay on a single spin.
- Paid symbols are cleared. Whatever sat above them falls, and new symbols tumble in from the top.
- The fresh grid is counted again. Another group of eight or more pays, and the cycle goes on.
- Once a refill brings nothing new, the chain stops and its total lands in your balance.
Note that this is a scatter pays grid and not a cluster grid. The eight symbols never have to be neighbours: a banana on the top row and one in the bottom corner both count towards the same total.
Fruit and candy payouts at R10 a spin
Nine regular symbols pay. Five fruits form the cheaper half, four sweets the richer half, and the red heart heads the list. Values are multiples of your total stake for eight or nine, ten or eleven, and twelve or more copies; the rand amount in brackets is what each pays when you spin for R10.

| Symbol | Eight or nine | Ten or eleven | Twelve plus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red heart | 10x (R100) | 25x (R250) | 50x (R500) |
| Purple sweet | 2.5x (R25) | 10x (R100) | 25x (R250) |
| Green sweet | 2x (R20) | 5x (R50) | 15x (R150) |
| Blue sweet | 1.5x (R15) | 2x (R20) | 12x (R120) |
| Apple | 1x (R10) | 1.5x (R15) | 10x (R100) |
| Plum | 0.8x (R8) | 1.2x (R12) | 8x (R80) |
| Watermelon | 0.5x (R5) | 1x (R10) | 5x (R50) |
| Grapes | 0.4x (R4) | 0.9x (R9) | 4x (R40) |
| Banana | 0.25x (R2.50) | 0.75x (R7.50) | 2x (R20) |
The table hides two lessons. The first is the leap into the twelve-plus band: apples go from R15 to R100 and plums from R12 to R80 at R10 a spin, so a tumble chain that keeps feeding one fruit can be worth far more than any single mid-sized hit. The second is how small the cheap wins are. Eight bananas hand back R2.50 on a R10 bet, so a lot of base game "wins" lose money. That is how the format works; the real value sits in long tumbles and the bonus.
Lollipops that open the bonus
Lollipops act as the scatter. They pay on their own and need no group of eight.
- Four: 3x the stake (R15 at R5) plus 10 free spins.
- Five: 5x the stake (R25 at R5) plus 10 free spins.
- Six: 100x the stake (R500 at R5) plus 10 free spins.
So a six-lollipop entry is already worth a hundred stakes before the first free spin. Inside the feature, three or more lollipops add 5 spins, and you can retrigger repeatedly.
Bombs, sums and a free spin in rand
During free spins the rules match the base game, with one addition: multiplier bombs carrying 2x to 100x. A bomb pays nothing alone and tumbles leave it in place until the chain has finished.
When the chain ends, all bomb values collected in it are added up, and the chain total is multiplied by that figure. Summed, not multiplied: 5x and 10x give 15x, never 50x. Our multipliers guide covers both systems. And if the chain had no win, the bombs have nothing to work on.
Worked example at R5
A free spin opens with eight plums for R4. They clear, the refill drops ten watermelons for R5, and after that nothing more connects. The chain total is R4 + R5 = R9.
Along the way three bombs showed up: 4x, 20x and 3x, which sum to 27x. The chain pays R9 x 27 = R243. Put those exact bombs on a spin with no group of eight and you collect nothing, because there is no win to multiply.
Now a stronger chain: twelve blue sweets pay 12x, R60 at R5, and a lone 10x bomb lands. That chain returns R600. Big rounds need both ingredients at once, a solid base win inside the chain and a decent bomb sum on top.
Double chance or the 100x buy
Two optional modes exist, and you cannot run them together.
Double chance adds 25% to your bet, so R5 costs R6.25. More scatters land as a result and your odds of reaching free spins double. It behaves like an ante bet: a fixed surcharge per spin, traded for bonuses that arrive more often.
Bonus buy charges a hundred stakes up front and starts the feature at once, R500 at R5. The bonus buy is greyed out while double chance is on, so each session you choose one route.
| Mode | Price at R5 | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Normal spin | R5 | Standard trigger odds |
| Double chance | R6.25 | Bonus odds doubled, no buy option |
| Bonus buy | R500 | 10 free spins straight away |
A bought round can easily pay less than R500. Treat every purchase as a single big bet whose results vary wildly, and only buy if your budget survives a few results below cost in a row.
Return to player, ceiling and the rules page
Payouts top out at 21,100x the stake, which is R105,500 at R5. The return to player depends on which build the operator picked, and the precise figure is printed in the game rules. Different sites can run different RTP settings of the same game, so read it every time you open the slot somewhere new; small gaps add up over thousands of spins.
On that rules page, look at three things: the theoretical return, the bet limits (standard play starts at 0.20 and tops out at 100) and whether the buy is offered where you are. Some jurisdictions disable it completely.
Where the 2019 game sits among the sequels
The original is the simplest of the family. Newer editions keep the grid, the tumbles and the paytable layout, then lift the bomb ceiling and widen the buy menu.
- Sweet Bonanza 1000 raises the bomb ceiling to 1000x, sells Super Free Spins for 500x and caps wins at 25,000x.
- The Super Scatter edition keeps the 100x bomb limit yet adds super scatters that can pay instant prizes worth as much as 50,000x.
- The 2500 version carries bombs as high as 2500x, offering two ante settings and two Super Spin modes to choose from.
To learn the mechanic with no extra layers, this is the place. For bigger bombs or more ways to pay for features, move up the line.
A demo routine and the legal picture
A word on the law first. The National Gambling Act of 2004 does not authorise online casino games in South Africa, and the only legal online betting is sports betting through provincially licensed bookmakers. We do not encourage breaking local law and never suggest VPNs or workarounds for blocks. The demo uses play credits, and anything involving real money is 18+ only. As a learning tool it costs nothing but a little data.
- Spin 100 times in the base game at a fixed stake and count how many spins return at least what you paid.
- Record how many spins pass before free spins arrive. One trigger proves little; three or four show a pattern.
- In each bonus, jot down the bomb sums and how often bombs land on a chain with no win.
- Play a second block of 100 with double chance on, then compare trigger counts with what the 25% top-up cost you.
- Use demo credits for a handful of bought bonuses and note how far each result lands from the 100x price.
Keep the sample in proportion: three hundred practice spins reveal the feel of the slot, not its long-term return.

Keeping the budget in check
Most of what Sweet Bonanza pays is packed into the free spins, and those arrive at uneven intervals. Choose a stake that covers several bonuses, not one. A simple test: if a single purchase would swallow over 20% of the money you brought, drop the stake or skip buying. Fix your loss limit ahead of the first spin, and walk away when you reach it, however tempting the last round looked.

Where Sweet Bonanza is offered
Questions from South African readers
How does a win work in Sweet Bonanza?
You need eight or more of the same symbol anywhere on the 6x5 grid; there are no lines and position is irrelevant. Paid symbols disappear, new ones drop in, and the tumble keeps going while fresh groups form. Several symbol types can pay on one spin.
What triggers the Sweet Bonanza bonus?
Landing at least four lollipop scatters awards 10 free spins. The scatter win is 3x with four, 5x with five and 100x with six, so R15, R25 or R500 at R5. During the bonus, three or more extra lollipops give you 5 more spins.
What do the multiplier bombs do?
Bombs worth 2x to 100x appear only during free spins. They stay put until the tumble chain ends, then their values are summed and multiply the chain win. Bombs of 4x, 20x and 3x turn a R9 chain into R243. No win means no payout.
What is the highest payout in Sweet Bonanza?
The cap is 21,100x your stake, R105,500 at R5. No other edition is lower: the 1000 and 2500 versions both stop at 25,000x, and Super Scatter at 50,000x.
What RTP does Sweet Bonanza run at?
That depends on the build the operator has chosen, and different sites can run different settings. Open the rules before you play; the exact theoretical return for the loaded version is printed there.
How much is the bonus buy in rand?
Buying the free spins costs 100x your bet, R500 at R5 or R1,000 at R10. It is locked whenever double chance is running, and some jurisdictions switch the buy off entirely.
What changes when double chance is active?
Each spin costs 25% more, so R5 becomes R6.25, and the bonus becomes twice as likely to trigger. Buying is locked for as long as it stays on, and the stake band shifts to 0.25 through 125. Try both settings in the demo first.
